Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I got the sample back from the engraving place. The result was better than I could have imagined!

The guy said the steel is so tough, the laser didn't even mark it the first time he tried. (He also managed to cut himself once.) So he had to set the laser on 100% power, and 20% "writing speed" to burn away the metal. Even then, it took only 30 seconds to do the engraving, but 4-5 minutes to do the setup work.
I could NOT get the price below $7.50 apiece, plus 6% Michigan sales tax. Total price is $7.95.
I know this is several dollars apiece more than we hoped, but I was so geeked by the results that I think we should go ahead. This will be a quality project all the way around, and something we can be proud of.
So our price for an engraved pocket knife is $28. I'll front the cost, and again ask the other HH members to contribute to wneighbor whatever you are comfotable with. It doesn't have to be the entire price of a knife, or an engraving job. But this will be an item that lasts a lifetime, and carries our message for a lifetime.
Thank you
PS: for you folks who are buying your personal version of the "HH Special", please freepmail me for details. Based on now-firm prices, we're talking $28 plus $4 for priority mail. And since I miscounted, I have to order at least ONE more knife. So if someone wants to join in, let me know before Saturday, when I will put in my makeup order.

To: HairOfTheDog
Bought it at a pawn shop?
To: 300winmag
I know this is several dollars apiece more than we hoped, but I was so geeked by the results that I think we should go ahead. Well, I can't blame you! - OK winmag! - I will adjust when I send the money to WN!
To: Corin Stormhands
No, but you want it to be... Yeah, I do. It's scary how you know me so well!

No, bought this one new.... but I bet they would have movies at pawn shops!
To: 300winmag
The knife is terrific! That engraving is beautiful! I sent Wneighbor a check already, so I'll send some additional to cover the extra cost.
I decided I'd get one to give to SSQ, so if you could add one to the additional order you're putting in, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for doing all this. The guys in Iraq are going to be so excited!

To: HairOfTheDog; Overtaxed
Yes! They do have movies at pawn shops. A friend of mine just sold his collection there. (He's been out of a job for over a year.)
