The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

No, I'm just talking about myself as far as the wine goes! Personally I think I want a nice long engagement... get engaged now, marry after grad school...

Usually, in "our" social circle, it's ok for the girl to get married that young but the guy is really supposed to be able to support her. When you see a young wedding, it generally means, well, Daddy's got a shotgun in the back parlor.

That joke is an "on the way home-er" - I didn't get it tell three posts later!

Quick, you better make some protestant jokes quick or we will all be in trouble by morning.

Huh! I swear I can't keep these factions straight. Well, have we offended everyone equally then?

Good Evening All; Okay Hair, you asked for it :-) From Left to Right

74" Hickory ELB (English Longbow) Originally tillered to 45/47 lbs, retillered to low 30's, remarkable wood maintained profile. (lucky tiller during weight reduction)

68" Osage ELB still at 45 lbs, made years ago, was in the first MoJAM bow test, chronographed at 145 fps - respectable. This one is on the wall, sentimental I guess but still has thousands of arrows left in it. Fine bow.

60" Hickory Flatbow roughed out. Lots of wood to take off this one before she's a bow, now she's a bow blank.

66" Osage Flatbow, originally 45 lbs now 35 lbs really good tiller and shoots like a dream. Has "Torges" style smooth handle-named after one of the osage bow gurus, Dean Torges.

70" osage flatbow, bow blank. Both this and previous are spliced billets (two pieces glued together) Note difference in limb thickness. Originally the above bow was this length. Lot of work left.

66" Osage Flatbow, old one bout 45 lbs. note difference in limb profile, this one is right from the tree, followed the undulations of the growth rings. The previous two were heat-gunned, and strapped on a form (caul) to cool.

Osage wood has a remarkable memory when heated and bent, stays in the bent shape yet can be taught to be a bow during the tillering (bending and wood removal process) As OT mentioned no sandpaper just cabinet scrapers.

72" Hickory ELB, bow blank, this blank was given to fellow bowyer at MoJAM who is going to glue up the Bamboo slat that I thinned and turn it into a bamboo backed hickory ELB bow blank and then I'll take over again and finish the bow to my new draw weight. It takes about 30 or so clamps and a form to do that right as well as the know-how. He has all three, so while he's gluing, I'll be working on my current project (which OT & G'nad and family saw) A sinew backed, double recurve osage pony bow (tell your pony he has nothing to worry about as it is just a design style name) These pony bows are similar in form to the bow the plains Indians used for buffalo hunting from horseback. Short and manuverable. It is coming along well, got some good advice at MoJAM so Good Lord Willing, the bow will be coaxed into use.

Remember, you asked. :-) Thanks for listening, I tend to go on and on.

OB

I wanted exactly what I got! Thank you! I tell ya, I could listen to you talk of tillering bending and osage and hickory and bamboo all day, it sounds like poetry to me. I love it as an art and a craft.

Too bad there was not a picture of some arrows... I also love to hear about fletching! :~D

And you are the coolest guy I know!

*snif*

That's okay Corin. I'm reading through posts now trying to catch up. You can be the coolest guy I know. Seems that you and Sam are the only ones that remember the elven ages of my childhood anyway.

And that is said in the highest of dwarvish respect.
