Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

To: RosieCotton; RMDupree
but what's the grey stuff on that plate, I wonder? Hmm...The grey stuff is a bit disturbing.... lets drink a bunch of Baileys and then dare each other to try it!

Morning 2J.
Has everyone got their flags finally?
I'm pretty awed that the soldiers saw fit to give us such a thank you, in the midst of their responsibility and danger. Like I kept reading during the battle, "where do they find guys like this?" Thanks once again for creating for us the opportunity to participate.
Cool that the guys are part of the 82nd, elements of that division were camped out only a block away, here in Miami, on the athletic field of the local junior high, during the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, they were here helping to maintain order when the whole neighborhood was so wrecked.
Meanwhile, Jeanne has admired your efforts, I've been showing her some of the pics and letters and stuff that come in. So she is now organizing a similar effort for a unit in northern Iraq. She's already got a bunch of people ready to contribute. A boy that we know very well from here (one of my son's close childhood buddies) is over there with the 101st.
She wondered if you would mind freepmailing me some details of how you made it work, plus items selected, etc.

Yeah, well, my mind wanders ..."If I sign on, and pretend to be her, wonder what ... And "wonder who ..."Ahem!
To: Corin Stormhands
Gotta get ready for a meeting...and I called this one... What was I thinking?
To: HairOfTheDog
Yes, that's what I did when I thought that!
Still, if she weren't my kid...... it would be fun.
But, I'm at least saner than to put myself through that.

It wasn't really very hard! I would suggest setting up a seperate account...that was the single best thing I did...
I'll email you some suggested items...remember, the items will most likely go through Kuwait. No pork!
When you get some funding, remember that about HALF of it will be needed for shipping! A ten-pound box costs $15 to ship. It must be Priority Mail. She can order Priority Mail supplies on line delivered to your house, or fetch them from the post office...I recommend the Priority Mail packaging tape and boxes highly. These are without cost.
Does she know how to do the customs forms and such?

Morning! Which am I I wonder!
Hair, you will help me when I am ready to set-up the Flat Frodo pics? Right?
Certainly!
do you have a recommendation for a hosting site for them? I have a few pics saved on an Ofoto site. Would that work?
Test post some pics from there and test it! - See if the links hold up.... Otherwise, www.yorkphoto.com works well. The links don't even have to last forever, ecurbh will re-host them on his site, posting them here is just the easiest way to get them to him in context.
To: Sam Cree; ecurbh; Overtaxed
Oh, and out of the 18 people that contributed, I've heard from 16 that they got their flags...
Waiting to hear from the other two...

And yet, they piled the students in an auditorium to just congregate with one another. And do nothing. Now, just what kind of inappropriate activities and conversation can come from 5 hours of pretty much unsupervised time like this? It has potential!!
To: 300winmag
Thanks winmag! I don't think I will buy one for myself, I am short on cash and want to buy at least two or three for the guys.

By the county line the cops where nippin' on our heels
Pulled off the road and kicked it in 4-wheels
Shut off the lights and tore though a corn field
What was I thinkin'?
Out the other side she was hollerin' "Faster!"
Took the dirt road, had the radio blastin'
Hit the honky-tonk for a little close dancin'
What was I thinkin' ?
Oh, I knew there'd be hell to pay, but that crossed my mind a little too late
'Cause I was thinkin' 'bout a little white tank top sittin' right there
In the middle by me
I was thinkin' 'bout a long kiss
Man, just gotta get goin' where the night might lead
I knew what I was feelin',
But what was I thinkin'?
When a mountain of a man with a "Born to Kill" tatoo
Tried to cut in, I knocked out his front tooth
We ran outside, hoods slidin' like Bo Duke
What was I thinkin'?
I finally got her home at a half past two
Her daddy's in a lawn chair sittin' on the driveway
Put it in park as he started my way
What was I thinkin'?
Oh, what was I thinkin'?
Oh, what was I thinkin'?
Then she gave a 'Come and Get Me' grin
And like a bullet we were gone again

I'll send you a copy of what she will need. She'll need one customs form for each box.

To: HairOfTheDog
It has potential!! Trouble is, I know what kind of mischief I can dream up. And you know darned well those school officials do as well. I really don't think it's an intelligent well-supervised thing to do. Not good stewardship of our children at all.
