Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Thanks for asking.
Since my husband travels a good bit, it has really messed us up. Esp. since it's been "up in the air" all day what it was going to do. And you know the media...they're excited about anything.
But, yes, we're prepared. Been out today buy the necessary items in case of loss of power and flood, ect.
Know you must at these times be glad your not down here. My youngest daughter has such a fear of storms, she actually loves L.A. with it's earthquakes.

Suzi: I just make my chicken fairly plain...my chicken tenders are battered the same way...flour, then egg/milk dip, then flour again. The only difference is I put a little garlic powder in with the flour. The livers are just plain.
Tonight I made the eggplant parmesiana dish and Steve said it was "award winning!" It was VERY good!
Osage, I thought you were deaf on the left...so that means that me, you and g'nad are all deaf on the right! I'll be!
Contributors, I am slowly hearing via email, posts and freepmail that "Operation Graditude" is arriving! Five out of the 17 people that contributed have contacted me. Please let me know when you recieve your box from Afghanistan! It really makes my day!

When I was a kid we lived sometimes on the coast. Were there for 2 hurricanes. We came home to central Texas when the storms came. Neighbor kids that I played with stayed. I was always kind of envious. Being out here on the "W" coast I don't get the chance to play with hurricanes much. When I was in CG boot camp in 1985, at Cape May NJ, hurricane Hugo came blasting up the eastern seaboard. About 24 hrs before the storm hit, the whole CG boot camp packed up and headed inland for Fort Dix. It was still a pretty wild storm, but our drill instructors still got a pretty big kick out of making us go outside in the middle of the night and do endless PT during a hurricane. They're a sick twisted lot, those DI's.
When we got back to Cape May, the whole place had been realy messed up by the hurricane. There was driftwood and sand and mud inside on the first floor of all the barracks. Yeesh. The DI's got a real kick out of us making the whole place inspection-ready by 0800 the next day. :-)

My youngest daughter has such a fear of storms, she actually loves L.A. with it's earthquakes. But at least with hurricanes you get some warning that they are headed your way. Earthquakes aren't so accomodating just yet...
To: Ramius
Pray all goes well for you.
I'm always a good audience for "Storm Stories". I've got some good 'em's myself having living down here for some...well, some thirty plus years.
To: mstar
thanks... but I'm not in the line of fire. I'm a good 2,000 clicks to the NW.

That's what I keep telling her, but will she listen..no. What's a mother to do.
To: mstar
Actually haven't lived on the coast in about 35 years, but never had a fear of the storms. I just never minded that sort of thing. But that doesn't mean that I don't believe is being prepared!
I know what you mean about the media weather reporting! My daughter and I were HAM radio storm watchers in a county just northwest of Waco for a couple of years. We used to laugh at the way the weather guys made up for no news with the littlest of nothing of a storm.

Hubby just came in with more up weather updates, so I guess I better see what's going on now. If I don't get back, hope you all have a good, safe evening.
If you all do anything more for the troops, my family would be interested in contributing.

These guys in the Hobbit Hole went through tornado warnings with me! Actually, sitting up with your tornados was one of the better adventures I've had this year! All came out okay. And that's what counts!

TV weather is showing video of waterspouts south of Galveston. Interesting. The only waterspout I've ever seen firsthand was out in the middle of the Gulf of Alaska. About 200NM South of Kodiak Island. We all stood there mouths agape with our binoculars on it, saying something to the effect of: "Holy ____, what the ____ is THAT thing doing HERE???". Never seen one since...

I just wanted some exercise!

The one I remember most vividly was actually the one that happened when I was youngest. Young enough that the mind pictures are vivid but I don't remember details.
It was after hurricane Carla. We returned to Gilchrist where we lived and driving along the highway everything looked deserted, devastated, doors and windows disappeared from houses, one house near ours had been relocated across the highway. The house looked okay except it was on the north side of the highway instead of the south side - and the door was blown back on itself and there were no windows left. I can see it as plain as it was then. The barrenness of the place was what impacted me. But, the neighbor kids who stayed had wonderful adventure stories and I was jealous.

My favorite aunt and uncle lived just north of Corpus for several years and my uncle said he thinks he's seen 2. One he knows he saw. The other was questionable. It was during weather like they got down there right now.
