The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yah... looks like the Texas coast (esp Corpus Christi) is about to get the front of some nastiness. I've already had some discussions with my guy that takes care of our Houston office. He's in Phx, but does the Houston office remotely. Good time to make sure that the backups are all working. These systems have a nasty habit of turning right once they land ashore, and running up the coastline. I don't think Houston is in the clear at all...

Hi...just catching up again...watching the weather, like I said before. My husband has to fly to New Mexico, so we had to make some kind of judgement as to the track of this storm in order to find a window of opportuntity so he could travel. It looks like Claudette is starting to turn to the west (thank God).

Yes, I ordered the poster. Believe me, this is not something I would ordinarily do. I have never bought movie posters before (being too good of a Christian women and politicaly savey and all)

The art work on New Line's LOTR is unbelievable. I have the matching Mr. Frodo poster from "Fellowship" and the "epiphany posters" from both films. New Lines' work on these films belongs in an art museum due to it's quaility.

So happy for you all getting the flags and all. That is really neat. From the news tonight the guys remaining in Bagdad are going to need a whole more "cheering up" and support.

Nope Houston is not in the clear. Galveston is evacuating on the west end. A large group of my friends live in Harris county and points south. I've been talking with them on email all day about the storm track. They've begun fastening down this afternoon, gathering in supplies etc. From the current track it looks like My Back Yard is almost exactly in the line of expected landfall.

Of course, those of us in the far inland parts of Texas are crass enough to sit here and hope that at least we get a some rain out of this. I mean, if it's coming anyway, it might as well give us some rain!!!

I was thinking the same thing. I mailed off the biggest package I've yet sent to my s-i-l today but it's awefully puny in the grand scheme of things.

Saw your post after I had already sent mine thanking God the storm is heading west from Houston. Are you west? If so, really sorry. I guess we all can get a little self-centered. Hope all is well with your family and area.

I'm way the heck too far to the north to think about coastal storms anymore. I moved to tornado headquarters. Wichita Falls. YUK.

I'd rather ride out a hurricane.

I agree.... and I am glad you have ordered the posters! I am a big fan of doing things you might not ordinarily do! :~D

No, no... I'm in WA. I run an IT dept for a company and we have an office in Houston. My worry (sad though it may be) is about the data on my servers in Houston. I figure the people there are sensible enough (???) to head out of town when things get wierd. The data doesn't know any better, and I just need to make sure that the tapes from the last good backup are in someone's pocket when they head out the door... :-)

Someday I'll tell the story about our Miami office in the last hurricane, and the data room about 12in deep in water...

You know how the "Weather Channel" has been saying that they believed the storm was going change from the NNW track to a more western direction? On the last "update" they were saying that has taken a jog to the west. Hope you are not west.

When I was a kid we lived sometimes on the coast. Were there for 2 hurricanes. We came home to central Texas when the storms came. Neighbor kids that I played with stayed. I was always kind of envious.
