When I was a kid we lived sometimes on the coast. Were there for 2 hurricanes. We came home to central Texas when the storms came. Neighbor kids that I played with stayed. I was always kind of envious.
Being out here on the "W" coast I don't get the chance to play with hurricanes much. When I was in CG boot camp in 1985, at Cape May NJ, hurricane Hugo came blasting up the eastern seaboard. About 24 hrs before the storm hit, the whole CG boot camp packed up and headed inland for Fort Dix. It was still a pretty wild storm, but our drill instructors still got a pretty big kick out of making us go outside in the middle of the night and do endless PT during a hurricane. They're a sick twisted lot, those DI's.
When we got back to Cape May, the whole place had been realy messed up by the hurricane. There was driftwood and sand and mud inside on the first floor of all the barracks. Yeesh. The DI's got a real kick out of us making the whole place inspection-ready by 0800 the next day. :-)
