The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

you can get one cheep at your local pawnshop :-)

Eek!

I pretty much gave up on the bean crop this year....the deer got it. So I plowed what poor scraggly plants that remained under. I should get a fall garden going.

Well, we were sending these packages to the 82nd Airborne in Kandahar, Afghanistan. But the 82nd is returning in about a month. It has been one of the most humbling things that's ever happened to me. Personally, I think so much of all the service personnel and to send whatever I can to them is just something I have to do.

These guys had their PX burn back in the late winter. The army was busy moving everything to the middle east in preparation for the Iraqi invasion so couldn't get that PX back like usual. So, we were trying to at least make up for some of the stuff the guys were missing. In this midst of this most of us have grown to love those guys something crazy. We listen for reports in news - rejoice over everything good and cry everytime we hear one of them has been lost. For me, and I know for some others, it's like we know them personally.

Anyway, when I posted those other letters a couple of days ago they were from my son-in-law who is a platoon sergent in Baghdad. We had also sent him 2 packages and a third is on the way tomorrow. I think mostly we just really really really want our people to know who much we appreciate them. And we want to show our love.

wrote a book. sorry.

Didn't he play Buckwheat?

Yes!! He was hilarious on SNL. Never cared for his one-man shows cause they were SO vulgar and foul-mouthed. I'm not a prude but at some point I was thinking, enough is enough!

LF! I am incensed at this guy! And he is going to be your new neighbor? I will start praying for ya'll now.

You know, stealing is stealing, even if it is gravel. Maybe he ought to be turned in. I bet the former gravel owner wouldn't be too pleased to find out what had happened!

Our downhill neighbor is a cop and his wife is in law school, so this could be interesting. Unfortunately they were the ringleaders that complained to the county about the winter lawns and driveways- the reason county decided to put the brakes on all pending permits. Those folks cost us several hundred dollars and will cost us many thousand more 'cuz we'll have to fence out their unruly dogs. *sigh* NASCAR county. How come common sense and decency makes me such a snob?

Beats me girl! Just this last 2 years of living in town and having close neighbors has given me a bad taste for neighbors. I'm a hermittish unsocial snob obviously.

Heh, and here we thought we were getting away from the worst of the nonsense by moving to the country! Can't help but laugh I guess. (Tho, I do have a garden catalog out... am looking into very tall evergreen hedges...)

Hedges are good. If it gets real bad plant poison ivy on the fence line - their side.

We feel the same about our guys over seas. It looks like many will be there for a good while. You know that has to be hard....the excitement of the "Push To Bagdad and Afghanistan" in the general public's eyes has, for the most part, passed, but for these guys in the desert or the seas, it's for the long haul. If there is anyway my family can contribute we would like to. We really care about our Service Men and greatly appreciate all they and their families have given.

Sure could!!! There was lots of poison ivy down by our creek when my mom and dad bought their place. Funny thing too, when they pulled it up, if any dropped anyplace it seemed to take root and grow. Kinda like mint. Just grew without any provocation!

But how would you dig it up to plant it without serious "tell all" problems erupting?

I don't have a problem with my neighbors....can't even see them when the trees are leafed out.

Is there anywhere you can buy potted poison ivy?

Beats me. Never tried that. Guess you could put on a rubber suit!

Truth is though that it doesn't affect me near as bad as an adult as it did when I was a kid. Still sometimes have it, but not as bad or as often. Can you build up immunity I wonder?
