Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Also read what this poor soul has written and couldn't resist adding one of my favorite quotes concerning those who HATE LOTR.
"HATE", mind you, not the "I don't get this..." GROUP.
It's from the book "Tolkien: Man And Myth" by Joseph Pearce, pp.7 where Pearce quotes a Paul Goodman in an article written for "The Daily Telegraph" answering critisms of "LOTR" voted, by readers of various entertainment outlets in the UK, as the best book of century.
"Acccording to Goodman the various aspects of the book's plot all point to conclusions as true they are commonplace: that growing up is painful, but cannot be avoided; that it involves hard choices, which we are free to take; that choices have consequences, and that even good ones will not bring back the past."
"If the book leaves many parts of the human experience unaddressed, it none the less explores the parts that are of the greatest importance."
"Goodman concluded his article by suggesting the 'the key' to LOTR was its 'religious sensibility': a sense that there is a final bliss to be enjoyed, though neither in Middle Earth nor on this earth. And though it has undoubted weaknesses, do they really outweigh its strengths-it's scales of vision, its fecundity of invention, the power of the writing?"
"No: Tolkien's epic is not the greatest book of century (I don't agree);
"BUT BE WARY OF THE JUDGMENT OF ANYONE WHO HATES IT."
I, personally believe many hate it because it deals with "power issues" and is a great parable of God's Grace.
And Jhoffa,(if you are still around) I take great offense in what you have written by your "handle" concerning Sam & Frodo.
To: mstar
M: well said and as true for our times as it was when it was written.
To: mstar
Don't worry about Jhoffa, he just comes in here to yank our chains from time to time; he makes his little jokes, pokes a little fun. Let him have his say and ignore him. I think for the most part he's just trying to kid around and get a rise out of us.
To: trini
O.K....thanks...there, I have settled down.
To: mstar
I only know that because he said as much on another thread yesterday. Hee hee!

Never heard that before, what's it mean? You don't remember Eddie Murphy on SNL doing "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood'? He would say a word, and ask the 'kiddies' in the audience, "can you say (whatever the word was)"? In one bit he was tallking about doing some 'street business', and he said, "Can you say ontamanure"? At least that's the way I remember it! LOL!
One night on the show he was complaining about one of his 'ladies', and he said, "can you say 'bitch'"? It was one of the funniest bits he ever did on SNL!

I was very excited but didn't say anything because I had a feeling that the rest of the contributors might be getting one too and wanted it to be a surprise!
I was not surprised, because the chaplain's wife sent me a picture of the chaplain underneath the flag "that he's sending to the lady in Oklahoma" was what her note said. It was sent with a bunch of other pictures too. I think she forgot I was on her family news update list! LOL I kept it a secret, even from the chaplain because I don't think he meant for her to tell me!
Here it is...

I don't think he'd send one to just a couple of the contributors without sending to them all...he did ask for all our names and addresses and I sent him a list, after I verified that everyone on my ping list got letters. So I imagine this next week will be an exciting time in the Hole.

Oh and my eye is much better. It does indeed seem to be healing very fast, because every time I take a nap (the Lortab makes me do that), I wake up with clearer vision and not so much irritation. Feels like I have a speck of dust in my eye now and not so much pain...I'm off the pain pills now.

OH! 2J!! That really hurts! OOoooo. I can't even put drops in my eyes so this sounds really uncomfortable. Get some ice cream, prop up and have Steve take care of you for the week!
Meanwhile. I am praying for this to heal NOW!!

Hair; that is surprising, that the new ones still have it. I concur, the engineer that came up with design should have to try to get one down in a rainstorm on the side of a dirt road. Got say GM has a better idea on that spare tire.
ps. grew up with Fords, dad worked at the Hazelwood Assembly plant as an accountant. Employees in those days drove Fords, Mercuries, or Lincolns in those days, period.

2JM; well, guess you know how to deal with it best, you're a nurse but no sense gutting it out if you can get some relief from the meds.
The Flag pic is great, pretty amazing if you ask me. We sure appreciate the men and women who serve.

Ah yes, I remember the skit, but had forgotton that part!

I'm finally at
my house: the crown of that maple is bent all the way to the ground now (I think I need that Saws-all) and some caterpillars ate my parsley. No flag in the mail (yet) and no rejection letter from that interview two weeks ago (good sign?)
Miss PG is glad to be the only cat in the house again.

Didn't he play Buckwheat?

Oh-tay!
Classic stuff!

My favorite is the commercial for the "Buckwheat Sings" album.

"Wookin pa nub in all da wong paces, wookin pa nub"

Okay, this photo brings tears to my eyes for THE RIGHT REASON!!!! I love this. I can't believe that they want to do something for us. I just can't believe it. It is so very humbling.

I don't understand what all is going on concerning the flags and all. Are the guys overseas sending them to you all to say "thanks" for care packages? Do you still do this? If so that's really neat.
To: Overtaxed
OT: glad you made it back safe and sound; a sawzall you say, bet you can get one cheep at your local pawnshop :-)
Sounds like there won't be much garden produce left, the way things are going. Not getting many new flowers on our tomato plants, they seem to have stopped, maybe just taking a breather.
Samantha is enjoying a OT treat as I type.

We just got back from visiting the property and boy am I hoppin' mad. Maybe mad is too strong a word,
flabberghasted is better.
The Gravel Rustler has struck again.
The uphill neighbor is establishing himself as a particularly classless and tacky individual. He's a pastey white, dough-ey fella who tools about the nighborhood on a four wheeler with a small wagon attached to it. The first time we saw him in action he had loaded a couple garden tools into the wagon and putted down to the house next door that was under construction. He then started shoveling gravel from the temporary driveway into his cart for use on his own drive. The bandit was stealing gravel!
Then today. We were wandering around our basement this evening when we heard a motor getting louder and louder. We peeked out and 'lo and behold: the G.R. was coming down our drive. He pulls up to the construction dumpster on OUR property and starts pitching his household garbage into it! I was so shocked that I didn't get a picture of him- I only have a pic of the garbage bags. I must learn to keep my wits about me in the face of such tackiness!
Big'ol talked me out of confronting the blankety-blank. Someday, tho. I might have to make mention of it to his wife. Maybe she'll be mortified enough to chew him out for me. If she's not, maybe I'll just give them their garbage back.
As we were leaving we saw him puttering in large, slow circles on some other sap's property.
I'm all for property rights, but folks gotta realize it's limited to your property!
Thanks for the chance to rant, OT.
