The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Cool! - Those are nicely done! Well, it looks from that Website like they are still in print or at least still for sale, so unless yours are special prints they might not be worth any more than the price there..... Check ebay perhaps!

Never! I was trying to show how the Elf thinks acting nice is equivalent to being a "wanker".

Hey, I've been meanin' to ask you another dog poop question. Two nights ago, Sammy left another present by the door. This time, right by the door.

Thing was, I took him out at 10 pm. Jr. took him out again at midnite. But the present was there by 6:30 a.m.

Think it was just another case of no one being around to take him out? Or could there be a larger behavioral or even medical reason? This has only happened once or twice since he's been housetrained.

Well, when you say he was 'taken out' did he poop then? And then poop again in the house? Or did he not go when he was taken and had to go later?

Does he usually try to wake you up in the night if he has to go? Or does he not know how to communicate that?

Is he free-fed or does he have specific feeding times? - what are they?

He pooped when I took him out at 10. Not at midnite when Jr. took him out. And he didn't ask the second time. I was going to bed so I told Jr. to take him out anyway.

He gets fed once in the a.m. and once at night, but he doesn't always eat then.

He won't wake us up. He won't even ask to go out when we're upstairs.

I'm thinking it was just a missed schedule thing.

Could be just a missed schedule. Gidget doesn't eat immediately when I put the food down either, so her time to go is whenever (time of meal+processing time=time to go) .... Too bad he won't tell you 'it's time' if you are upstairs....

It's tough.... if he is going right at the door, he had it under control and getting as close as he could to going outside on his own. If he was going 'whereever' like he didn't have the time or presence to try to go out it would indicate to me more of a medical issue. Trouble is his time and your time wasn't the same.... Mine will wake me up, but I don't do walks, I don't put them out to go unless and until they tell me, unless the door is just standing open, which it often is during the day. And most times Gidget doesn't need out from 10 or so till morning. Logan had a fairly frequent 3 am need, and Zulu in here later months.

One thing that might have developed from the episode over the weekend is that he now thinks this is an OK place to go.... I wouldn't overtly punish him if he really has to go and didn't have an alternative. That isn't fair. But I would try to encourage him to come get you, and I would make a big fuss over cleaning it up if he does it again.... Meaning, make him witness a big production of yelling and growling about the mess and cleaning it up so that he knows you were not pleased, and then immediately take him outside and play with him there so he knows there is a place and time when you are happy with him.

That is what I thought too. The only difference that might be on mine is they say 'Christopher Enterprises' on them. I can't see that on the others I found online. Hmmm. I'll try ebay and see what I find there. Regardless, I'm glad to have them myself. :) Think I'll frame them anyway.

He was well aware of my anger Friday night. I wasn't really harsh with him tho except when I tried to put him in his kennel and he ran upstairs. I had to drag him downstairs again.

We'll just keep a closer watch. The Friday episodes were not by the door. The second episode was.

The more we talk about this (and are we grossing the others out yet?), the more I think this was not a behavior thing, or a medical thing, but desperation. He was basically indoors for three months while it was raining - literally about 11-12 weeks when we couldn't leave him out. In all that time we never had a problem.

Bought James Taylor's Greatest Hits and a chair.

Sounds like you are set! - My cable just went out (they sent a notice last week that this would happen for various periods this week) so I have put on a bit of James Taylor myself while I get dressed to go out.... Have some errands to do today.

I also need to start checking my mailbox every day for the concert tickets so they don't sit out there for weeks! This will be real good therapy for my mailbox phobia.

CORNY ALERT

This song reminds me a bit now of the amalgam of people and friendships in the Hobbit Hole, if the Hobbit Hole is "she". (Corin, I looked up "amalgam" before I used it to make sure it is OK!.... see def. 2 ;~D http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=amalgam

Something In The Way She Moves
James Taylor

There's something in the way she moves,
Or looks my way, or calls my name,
That seems to leave this troubled world behind.
If I'm feeling down and blue,
Or troubled by some foolish game,
She always seems to make me change my mind.

Chorus:
And I feel fine anytime she's around me now,
She's around me now
Almost all the time.
And If I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now,
And she's been with me now
Quite a long, long time
And I feel fine.

Every now and then the things I lean on lose their meaning,
And I find myself convening
In places where I should not let me go.
She has the power to go where no one else can find me,
Yes, and to silently remind me
Of the happiness and good times that I know
But I said I just got to know them

It isn't what she's got to say
Or how she thinks or where she's been.
To me, the words are nice, the way they sound.
I like to hear them best that way
It doesn't much matter what they mean,
Well she says them mostly just to calm me down.

Chorus:
And) I feel fine anytime she's around me now,
She's around me now
Almost all the time.
If I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now,
And she's been with me now
Quite a long, long time
Yes, and I feel fine.

OK - I am in a hopelessly sentimental mood.
