The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Aragorn Teaser Poster...

You know we've talked all around whether or not Tolkien meant this as allegory (he said he did not). But do you think PJ intentionally has Aragorn look like the "traditional" (western at least) images of Jesus?

I've mentioned before that I did my freshman research paper on "Christlike Symbolism in The Lord of the Rings." Frodo=The Deliverer, Gandalf=The Resurrected and Aragorn=The Triumphal King.

I cannot hear Dan Fogelberg's "Leader of the Band" without thinking of my Daddy and getting fahklempt. Daddy was a carpenter, but loved to plunk out music on the boy' guitars, and tell stories about when he was growing up, and that song just nails it!

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And papa I don't think I said
"I love you" near enough

Correction. They(Snopes) said it was not "confirmed".

I thought I read it all those years ago in that Time article. "Fire and Rain" was his first big hit, and they were talking about the song. Maybe it was just a 'publicity' story, quien sabe?

Or just plain crashed and burned, mentally and physically!

Yep, Leader of the Band gets me too. My dad had only been dead two years when I graduated. I think I have them on the same album.

><> I don't know really what it is about, but I think it sounds to me like Suzanne died in a plane crash.. <><

From a website:

Taylor's hit song "Fire and Rain" is about the suicide of a woman he became close to while in rehab and about getting off heroin itself.

"There is an amusing myth about the meaning of the song. According to the myth, the song tells the story of Taylor's girlfriend, Suzanne, being killed in an airplane crash on her way to meet him at a concert. The myth is very popular among Taylor fans, and this is why I find it particularly pathetic. The idea of the plane crash comes from the line, "Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground." One would think that fans would know the history of their idols. "The Flying Machine" was the name of a band Taylor had in New York--a band that broke up ("in pieces") in large part because of Taylor's drug use. There is an excellent discussion of this Urban Legend on the Snopes Web Site. Be warned, however, that the article makes an assumption about when Taylor met Suzanne by not taking into account the common practice of changing song lyrics drastically over time. Otherwise, the article is dead-on. "

interesting reading, anyway ....

Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground...

Then again, Patsy Cline recorded Sweet Dreams, and died in a plane crash...

Sweet dreams of you
Things I know can't come true
Why can't I forget the past, start loving someone new
Instead of having sweet dreams about you

Cue: Twilight Zone music...

Live stream: Leader Of The Band Dan Fogelberg

LEADER OF THE BAND
Dan Fogelberg

An only child alone and wild
A cab'net maker's son
His hands were meant for diff'rent work
And his heart was known to none
He left his home and went his lone and solitary way
And he gave to me a gift
I know I never can repay

A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldn't wait
He earned his love thru' discipline
A thund'ring velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand

The leader of the band
Is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs thru' my instrument
And his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band

My brother's lives were diff'rent
For they heard another call
One went to Chicago and the other to St. Paul
And I'm in Colorado
When I'm not in some hotel
Living out this life I've chose
And come to know so well

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And papa I don't think I said
"I love you" near enough

The leader of the band
Is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs thru' my instrument
And his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band
