Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Kansas City, yes.... I think she is on the plane right now? - Gonna be there a week. She is bringing internet capability with her, and going to meet up with Osagebowman.

When my brothers and me were much younger we used to have fights with M-80'sMy brothers did things like that too. So, I had to participate in self-defense. Which probably explains a lot of the adreniline intensive activities I like as an adult.

the highest value being the space it is taking up! LOL Yes, I can see that working.
One thing I'm now looking at is that some of the things I brought home are just not me - and don't really fit in at my house. Not that I have a decorating scheme or anything - but they don't fit with my classic junk. And yet, the items are things that were gifts to Grama from me and the girls over the years - and they did fit her.
I think I've mentioned that the reason I bought a 3 bedroom house here is that she had planned to move in with us when she could no longer live at home. Therefore, she has a room in my house. Okay, for now, I stuck those things in her room. But one thing I was also thinking on the way home is that I need to have a fruit-basket-turnover in the house so I don't get over emotional about "Grama's room." So, if I do that, then something else has to happen to that stuff.

Okay, I could become a little envious. That is within a day's drive of here. Although a very very long days drive.

I'm with ya, sis...I would love to dash up there, but it would be too hard a trip with the boys.
And besides...OUR refrigerator went out! It was 25 years old, time for a more modern looking one anyway...so we bought another one yesterday and they are delivering it Tuesday.
Thankfully, I caught it right before everything started to defrost...the milk being slightly warm was what caught my attention. I just moved everything out into the fridge in the shop...where I normally keep my garden seeds and bait. It's clean, though.

I KNOW!! I've been dying to run up there ever since I knew she was going to be that close...but I'd have to leave the boys with my folks. And that's just something I won't do...for that long anyway!

Keep a couple special things, memory-focusing things that you can look at or touch to bring her back a little, but if you don't like it, you don't have to keep it. Lord knows I have had to do enough estates in the past few years and I am familiar with the mixed emotions. I liked my Mom's style of stuff.... she bought good furniture mostly very plain shaker or Amish style antiques. Most of her stuff is either here or at the beach house. My grandfather on my dad's side, however had very different taste, colonial or french or something, his furniture all had feet with toes. And leather-topped coffee and end tables.... can you imagine anything less practical? - I don't want coffee tables that I can't set a glass on. ;~D We sold his stuff to someone at a garage sale who would appreciate it more than we could!
Only have a few regrets..... there was a hideous lamp that was my step-dads.... orange art-deco orb thing.... I miss that... The marriage of the Amish and Frank Lloyd Wright of decor when they paired up was a riot.

Besides, the AC is going out in my car and the whole car isn't in that gooda shape anyway.... *laughing* Thank you! Too familiar with that right now too! I had a friend scrounge me 2 new tires from a wrecking yard this week because he was so concerned about me driving. That coupled with a power steering pump that goes through about a quart of fluid a week and using about a quart of oil every 500 miles lately. Then, Friday, there appeared a noise - sounds like the exhaust has come loose from the manifold or something!
am i a redneck?

My eldest told me he wants me to buy a bunch of land so he can get married and live on the land with us! He told me "We wouldn't even need a fence between us!"
Isn't that sweet?? I hope he marries a young lady that likes me well enough to do it. But I also will keep my end of the bargain and not tell her how to run her house!
My mom asked me to take her to buy those pre-ordered groceries the other day and I said "Sure, if you won't comment about how my car looks"...the minute she got in the car she lit in on me about what a slob I am!
Argh!
But now this is funny...
A few weeks ago she commented about how I don't want her to come over to my house because I didn't want her to see how messy my house was. I responded by saying "No, I don't want you to come over to my house because I don't want to HEAR about how messy my house is! I'm perfectly happy with my house! I do pretty good, I think, with 3 guys living here!
I was actually chuckling when I said that...I wasn't mad at all...but I did think it was one of my best retorts ever.

Only have a few regrets..... there was a hideous lamp that was my step-dads.... orange art-deco orb thing.... I miss that... The marriage of the Amish and Frank Lloyd Wright of decor when they paired up was a riot. I guess it's weird because right now, everything I see in the house reminds me of Grama. And I don't want to part with something that I think I will regret later.
That said, I have carefully chosen anyway. She gave me her bedroom furniture when I moved up here so that is the main thing I have from her. It was also her grandmother's. Myranda's bed belonged to Grama's mother. The stuff that I have brought now is small things. Like for some weird reason the year we moved up here Myranda and I gave her 2 stuffed hearts to hang on the wall so she'd know she still had our hearts even though we were 200 miles away. She treasured those dumb ugly stuffed hears and hung them prominently in her bedroom. And I could not let them go. They are now in "her room" here.
But, funny twisted irony - when my grandfather died my mom took the one old family heirloom that he had put my name on. It was his grandmother's watch. My mom would not give it to me even though he said it was for me and he put the words, "for kim" on the box containing the watch. So, in retribution, Grama had found a metal lock box, printed the exact same words in large print across the box and has told me for years where the box was hidden and where the key was so when she died I would have the contents. I never knew what was in it. When I opened it - it was my grandfather's watch and her old watch. I cried and laughed at the same time. I told Grama's sister about it and my aunt laughed and responeded that it really pi$$ed my Grama off that my mom stole the other watch from me and that was obviously her payback.
There were a couple of other little post-mortem jabs that I found as well. All in all I think she must have been entertained thinking of them.

She sounds like so much fun.
My grandmother had a beautiful carved wood table, and she gave it to my mom (the only girl) and I assumed (wrongly) that she would give it to me someday because I was the only girl and I had such fond memories of many special dinners at the table.
My mom gave it to my brother and his wife, "Laura Ashley". I threw a fit.
I think my mom regrets it because Laura Ashley is such a pretentious snob.
