The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!
Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I keep forgetting T was using Nordic mythology as his setting...but he kept talking about how it was pre-christian as well... he he.. That could really get us into some philosphical discussions. Since Tolkein refered to his work as completely Catholic, then I've always found it easy to move Valinor into a kind of purgatory. However, we note the similarity (sort of) in the words Valinor and Valhalla. So, if you start working that in... you can go on all kinds of after-life tangents.
One of the primary things about Tolkein is that he always insisted that he had not written allegorically. He went to a lot of pains to try to get that across. Therefore, when we try to interpret him allegorically, it won't work. Instead I think we all can find spiritual truths in different ways for our own lives in his work. I think that was more his goal.

If you have the SE DVD watch the commentaries...particularly by Billy and Dom and how they tricked elijah one day making up a game called 'tig.' They had just made it up on the spot, but utterly convinced our Blue-Eyed Ringbearer that it was an actual game, and that it had VERY specific rules...they had him going for weeks...and the rules were constantly changing "no, Lij, you CAN'T double tig a tog"...that sort of thing...those two were evil!! LOL
You are talking to a Red Dwarf fan here too!!! Rimmer is the best!!

"keys of death" away from Satan? That would have released them (Men) upon His resurrection, wouldn't it of? He took the keys of death, hell and the grave. Maybe Valinor is hell. ha ha ha... don't get mad - don't take me serious. That was tongue in cheek and I couldn't resist!

I get it now, Bear. I'm sorry!

LOL....I haven't watched it with the commentary yet! Maybe that's what I'll do tonight. That's too funny.
RD is the best. My former roommate and I spent..I believe it was New Year's weekend...all weekend taping the whole marathon that was on BBC America. They showed the whole series and we taped every one. She taped her set from the living room TV and I was taping from the basement TV. I even slept down there on the couch with an alarm set to go off when I needed to change the tape! But I have every episode! :-) Although now they are coming out on DVD and I will have to get them of course.

I'm treading softly on elf bashing ground here, but I imagine having Elrond's stern face around for eternity could very well be hellish! LOL!

RIMMER: I can't let you out.
LISTER: Why not?
RIMMER: Because the King of the Potato People won't let me. I begged him. I got down on my knees and wept. He wants to keep you here. Keep you here for ten years.
CAT: Could we see him?
RIMMER: See who?
CAT: The King.
RIMMER: Do you have a magic carpet?
LISTER: Yeah, a little three-seater.
RIMMER: So, let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet to see the King of the Potato People and plead with him for your freedom, and you're telling me you are completely sane?! I think that warrants 2 hours of W.O.O.
LISTER: What's W.O.O?
CAT: You had to ask.
RIMMER: With ... out ... oxygen. No oxygen for 2 hours. That will teach you to be bread baskets.

I like longer hair myself. Faramir would like nice in longer hair. The hair makes a difference! I saw the actor who plays Faramir (David Wenham??) in a small role in the Crocodile Hunter movie (very cute flick) he played the fish and game officer. He is a perfectly good-looking but completely ordinary fella. Put some fluffy blonde locks on him and some armor and voila- a Hunky Man of Gondor drool-fest!
To: Dawntreader
NOPE...you are NOT the only one...I LIKED Elrond...but I am also one of those people who would probably be sent into fits just by the elves' arrogance and attitudes...

I can't find it right now, but I'm pretty sure Celeborn departed at a different time...and really, nobody even noticed his passing.
I remember reading it somewhere...maybe in "The Unfinished Tales"? Or the Silmarillion?
I found in my Tolkien Companion this statement:
"When Galadriel finally returned over Sea at the end of the Third Age, Celeborn abandoned the woods of Lothlorien and dwelt for a while in Rivendell, together with the sons of Elrond. No record remains of the date when he finally grew weary of Mortal Lands and sailed west from the Grey Havens, taking with him 'the last living memory of the Elder Days of Middle-earth.'"
To: Alkhin
I just can't wait until I finally read the books to compare the "book" Elves to the "movie" Elves.
