Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I've got a patch of the stuff that's starting to strike out on its own! I was pretty sure at the old place that my climate conditions were just too bad for lemon balm. Too many long days 100+ temps and not even close to enough moisture. Also, grasshoppers. Swarms of Biblical proportions some years.
I'm hoping that conditions will be better here. At least I haven't had the grasshoppers.

Yes, what Jackson did with that whole scene was incredible. Very heartbreaking.
That does seems harsh of Tolkien :-(

Hey DT, what does "Smeg on" mean? (Your tagline)

RE: post of Arwen and Aragorn
you are so good. If I hadn't already given you the first prize of the day for the Barf Brooks post I'd give it to you now. You'll just have to take a 2nd place ribbon to go with that first place one from this morning.
To: RMDupree
That's what really gets me. She is totally utterly alone.

wow...great explanation...I keep forgetting T was using Nordic mythology as his setting...but he kept talking about how it was pre-christian as well...which leads me to think that perhaps the after-life of men was spent in limbo until the Son of God was able to release them from the bondage of death. But he never put in any indication that they had that kind of hope, which makes wondering what it was they had to look forward to that much more difficult...

"Hey DT, what does "Smeg on" mean? (Your tagline) "Just a reference to me being a total Red Dwarf fan. It's a British Sci-Fi Comedy show that was on a few years back. I don't really know how to explain this, but they made up the word "Smeg" for use as a swear word. Fans of the show are known as "Smegheads". I just threw that in my tagline, like "Rock on".
To: Alkhin
pondering long and hard on the meaning of the word 'tig'Isn't that a hoot? We've watched that over and over. Cracks me up! Poor Elijah...
It sounds like something my brothers would do my littlest brother - I can totally imagine it!
To: Alkhin
Hmmmm. That got me thinking. When Jesus "died" on the cross, didn't He take the "keys of death" away from Satan? That would have released them (Men) upon His resurrection, wouldn't it of?
To: RMDupree; All
Ok, here's what happened to Arwen. It's very simple. Elrond was given the ability to choose whether or not he wanted to be elvish or mortal, because he was "half-elven". He chose elvish.
His kids were all given the same ability to choose.
Aragorn would die and was promised an afterlife. Arwen could choose to live forever with their love being just a memory or she could choose to be mortal and live the afterlife too, with Aragorn in eternity, where there is more than memory.
To: Alkhin; Dawntreader
Aaaaaah! I see!
I thought it was something like "Smeagol On" = good mood and "Gollum On" = bad mood! LOL!
I am far too entrenched in LoTR for my own good!
To: Alkhin
"(Rimma is the King of the Potato People)"LOL!!! That episode is one of the best!

I've got a patch of the stuff that's starting to strike out on its own! This brings up an interesting point. One of those Tolkein loose ends. You know how he was making notes always and so many different versions of some stories? Well, the place I got that said that Celeborn stayed, was actually from reading last night. In the set of books that I bought Myranda, there is more information in her forward (i think it is) than in my version. I don't have it here so can't copy it. But, it said that Celeborn stayed long after Galadriel left and that Elrodan and Ellohir also stayed long afterwards and those 3 were the last to leave.
When I read that I did not get up and go get my books to compare... but I would have sworn that Celeborn left with Galadriel.
Well, now I have research to do when I get home today.
Anybody else run into anything like this? 2J, this would have been from the set of books in question with the bad maps.
To: 2Jedismom
Thanks 2J!
i knew you would clear it up.

I just had a wicked thought. Did squirrels bury Arwen?
To: RosieCotton
yeah, there was some mention time to time about the kind of things Dom and Billy would do...I remember there was an article about Dom and Billy at one of the Exhibit dinners...whilst one of the ladies went about putting out name tags, and setting up the tables, they went around behind her and turned things upside down, switched them...all sorts of stuff. I wouldnt know whether to laugh or kill them!! You're right...poor Elijah!!! (what a sweetie!!)
here's Billy caught in the act:

His kids were all given the same ability to choose.Bingo! That's what I was trying to say earlier. Arwen was just as mortal as Aragorn as followed the same path after death as he did.
To: 2Jedismom; RMDupree
Thank you 2J! That clears it up a lot for me!
RMDupree: Smeagol on! I like what you thought it was lol
