The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Jen,

How well do you know how to do algebra?

Heh...the last time I took algebra, Richard Nixon was still in the White House...and his poll numbers were still good...

Yes, because Smeagol has to do algebra before she can take probability and statistics...

And I suck at math...

Good morning...

I remember some algebra... what are your questions?

Thank you!

If my solution is -3x = 222... do I divide by -3 on each side, or do I just divide by 3...

Thank you!

Yes, divide by -3 on each side; x = -74.

Just out of curiosity, what was the original problem?

-x-1=222+2x

On my next post, I'll show you how I came up with my solution, because the web page says I'm doing it wrong.

-x-1=221+2x -x-1=221+2x-2x -2x-x-1=221 -2x+(-x)-1=221 -3x-1=221 -3x-1+1+221=1 -3x=222 -3x/-3=222/-2 =-74

My brother complains that there I'm doing it the hard way, but the Prof wants, for this chapter, to see every step so that if we go wrong, he can find out where we did. In the next chapter, we can start doing some shortcuts.

-x-1=221+2x
-x-1=221+2x-2x
-2x-x-1=221
-2x+(-x)-1=221
-3x-1=221
-3x-1+1+221=1
-3x=222
-3x/-3=222/-2
x= -74

Hate to say it, but I agree with the web page...

-x-1 = 222+2x

Add (x) to both sides...

-1 = 222+3x

Subtract (222) from each side...

-223 = 3x

Divide each side by (3)...

-74.333 = x

(x is actually -74 1/3)

Are there any rules on which side you should take x from.

You went one way, I went the other... is there a rule that I'm not following.

Thanks!

Your way works too... your answer is correct if the number is 221 rather than 222... ;)
