Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I've got "In Dreams" and have "May It Be" figured out although I can't play it in the same key as the movie version.
I thought the picture was pretty cool.
To: RosieCotton
I tear up every time I hear it because the lyrics are so hopeless. :-(
To: Overtaxed
Ooohhh! Very cool pics! I love the Andy Serkis one.

Me too! Does this mean he has a serious bid for best supporting actor?

I remember you mentioning a book with tacky maps from the trivia contest. I kind of jumped to a conclusion that it was only this new movie-pictured books that had those. But, as soon as I looked at Myranda's FoTR, I knew that I too had some lousy maps in hand.
I just got back from picking her up from school and wasting my time on wild goose chases because she doesn't take care of her responsibilities though. I'm not sure I'm in the mood to get her books with good maps today now. Can I have some of your medicine? I didn't even get lunch and I'm back to work 10 minutes late. (fuming mom here.)

You're on the rumor building merry-go-round again aren't you?

That is a beautiful shot of Arwen at Aragorn's tomb, Overtaxed. "For your consideration" indeed!
That was a quite compelling scene. Oh... what a tragedy! And Arwen walking alone through the trees in the shot that followed. Of all the flashbacks to Arwen, that is the one I loved.
Hers can't be an eternal love, but a short love with an eternal separation. Man o man! If he loved her, he should have put her on the boat.
That scene and Theoden's scene at Theodred's tomb teared me up, and the cinematography was gorgeous.

Hi all!!
I was fortunate enough to be given the hardback 1965 printing of LOTR...but bought a 'new' HMCo publishing of The Hobbit with the fake green leather, and Tolkien's drawings. Tolkien seems to have had a flair for Impressionism, right? Wish I could draw *my* characters....
Anyway, hope all is well here!

That scene and Theoden's scene at Theodred's tomb teared me upYeah...the part that got me was when he said "No parent should have to bury his child" or something to that effect.
Arwen does die eventually, right?

Yes, she does... But I don't think their spirits can live in the same house.
Anyone?
To: Overtaxed
ahhh. Thanks. I need this real bad. Now, it just needs to take affect. soon.
To: Overtaxed
Yeah...the part that got me was when he said "No parent should have to bury his child" or something to that effect. That got me, too. Though just about any scene like that is more emotional for me than it was a year ago. I've been there.
Got the tracking number for my whistles! Now I have to try to refrain from checking it every ten minutes. Wonder if there's ANY chance they'd come Friday? Probably not.

Ok, I'm confused. I was always under the impression that Arwen gave up her immortality to marry Aragorn. Did she?
Or did she just "choose a mortal life" .... living as a mortal, but is still immortal.
To: HairOfTheDog
Yes, she does... But I don't think their spirits can live in the same house. It says in the Simarillian that we definitely know elves go to the house of dead in Valinor (the ones that die in war or of grief) but no one knows what Iluvatar's plans for men are after death.
To: Dawntreader
I thought she gave up her immortality, too. Is that a movie change, or am I nuts?
To: HairOfTheDog
You know, Arwen's 'doom' is what bothers me the most about elvish metaphysics....If you choose to leave ME, you 'live.' But if you chose to stay with the one you love, you are doomed. Is there no rest for elves who love those back in ME? Is love not rewarded? I think this is one reason why I decided I would not like living in Middle Earth. It is so pre-Christ, I am not sure I could live with that despair. Arwen's choice to stay was not merely out of reckless love...her decision to stay helped good win over evil.
I am not sure I like the way Tolkien set things up for his elves. It seems a harsh 'punishment' when an elf has the audacity to love beyond her ken.
I dunno. There's stuff about Tolkien's heaven that bothers me.
To: Dawntreader
Ok, I'm confused. I was always under the impression that Arwen gave up her immortality to marry Aragorn. Did she?Okay, someone who has the book with them might get this better than me. But, after Aragorn's death, Arwen wanders - she goes to Lothlorien and it says she lays down on that hill (or was it a meadow) where they met for the 2nd time in Lothlorien. And if memory serves she just kind of lays there till she goes. Like one of the elvish grief deaths I think. See how good I am with words? If I had the book here and could reference that would sound a lot more articulate.

ahhh. Thanks. I need this real bad. Now, it just needs to take affect. soon. Chamomille tea with ginger root isn't nearly as good as green tea with ginger root.
