Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

This is close to what I ultimately got and love a lot...it has Black Riders on the box, though and they are paperbacks...

Well, I was very upset about the ones I got for Myranda as well. I discovered this problem while away last weekend so ya'll didn't hear about it. The older daughter has read the books and she can take them or leave them. Her husband is the one in that household that loves them. I have no idea what her maps are like as they live in Germany and I haven't talked to her since my discovery in Myranda's book. But, she probably wouldn't get it anyway.
However, since Myranda is a Tolkein fanatic, she deserves good books. And the granddaughter is going to be 10 so she won't really appreciate the maps as much....maybe.... she IS sharp though.

I found some Houghton-Mifflin at christianbook.com. I'll probably order those. I don't have a clue what my old ones are... but like you said... they're '70's vintage. The first daughter got hers around about 1983-84. Myranda got hers about 94. The older daughter may have bad maps too... but if she doesn't know.......
like I said, she's not a fanatic.

I was 12, my friend, when I fell in love with Tolkien and these maps and cherished them for more than 25 years.
I intend to run a copy of the good maps and stick them in with these books, then send them off to the troops. I can't even justify sending them to troops with these dispicable maps.
I even got a book with the tacky maps when I won the trivia contest. Sigh.

Glen bought me the 3 in 1 Houghton Mifflin edition with the Christopher Tolkien maps, thank goodness!
Yet, if memory serves, I have a copy of FoTR from Ballantine sitting around at home. If it has SS's maps in it, I'll send it to you for proper....disposal. :)

LOL!!
The Tacky map books are good for reading in the tub. That's what I use them for. I turn the pages with my wet fingers and could care less. They are so warped now that I can't get them back in their box (remember I have two sets...it's the unwarped set I intend to send to the troops).
Anyway, the are small and easy to hold when reading in the tub. So they have a function.

Going out to eat with the boys...see everyone later.
What is HHD??
I can put HOH. It means Hard of Hearing in nurse lingo and was actually put on a piece of paper on my bed when I had Joshua.

Hobbit Hole Dweller.
I believe it was ksen ( or was it Overtaxed?) who suggested we should put something in the tagline that would single us out when we visit the other side of FR.
To: RMDupree
Gotcha! I like it!

Well, I don't think you're dumb! And I don't think your installation is messed up either. I've done some checking, and I think the Bronze Age may be the last age you can reach in the original AoE. I'm not 100% sure though... it's been that long since I've played it, and I don't even have it loaded on my current computer! Have you checked the documentation, or the help file?
To: RMDupree
Must have been ksen.

"I hope I never meet her, I rank her right up there with Bill Clinton."Yikes! Those maps are that bad? lol...I can't wait to look at them now.

Read instructions? Isn't that like a last ditch effort?
I guess I can check tonight. But my brother was able to build farms and such...even though I did all the research stuff I could and all the upgrades I could, I couldn't do farms or temples or anything like that. I'll have to do some reading, I guess!
To: 2Jedismom
This is the one I have. It's one volume with all 3 inside, as well as, the Appendices, Index, Glossary, language info, etc. It's softcover, so it's already a bit battered and worn, but I love it!
To: Overtaxed
I thought it was, but didn't want to goof and say it as fact until someone verified it. :)
To: RMDupree
It's ksen's fault! He did it!

I'm on my second time through them and my daughter is on her second time through. Does yours have a clear, plastic-like coating coming off the covers yet?

I still haven't decided if I like that song or not. We already have "May It Be" and "In Dreams". Haven't talked Dad into playing it, though!
