The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I did a quick search and found nothing but that doesn't mean much. Go ahead, stick it up so your friends can see it.

The BIG Moot is next January. THAT'S the one that'll be absolutely awesome!

That's something I am still looking at. I would love to go, and I might be able to make it work.

You don't have any of the cheap Ballintine books they sell with the movie pics on the front? They are the little ones, that are in every grocery store and Walmart! The Houghton Mifflin maps are copies too, but of the exact same maps from my 1970s books. I believe Christopher Tolkien drew them.

Easier if you just look at the maps in the store...I don't have a scanner. Mine are pretty warped anyway from reading them in the tub.

This is the current TTT with the vile, disgusting, stupid, revolting maps:

Curls my toes, as I find Faramir more interesting every time I watch it, and Eowyn too.

Those books are ok, for reading in the tub and in the rain or somewhere they might get messed up. The text is still the same, but apparently, unbeknownst to me, some chick named Shelly Shapiro redid the maps the way she likes them, and they don't look anything like Christopher Tolkien's original maps. I think they are are overdone and annoying and then she slaps her big fat name right down there on the bottom of them like they were all her idea in the first place. God help me I'm gonna have a stroke.

The Houghton Mifflin version is re-done too, but the publisher goes to a great deal of trouble to mention that the person that re-drew them went to great links to only make the originals clearer...I like them much better.

To advance an age, you have to build two different buildings unique to your current age.

I think that's where I'm getting messed up, either because I dumb, or because something is wrong with my installation. I built TONS of buildings - everything in my list at least once. But it still wouldn't let me advance! And I did research on everything that was listed as an option...but it still didn't list any new buildings (other than sentry towers, which I had lots of) and medium walls. So I'm lost...

You know, I never realized that maps were different in different books. My set is an old set from the 70's. But, I've bought sets for both my daughters. All 3 sets are different. Last week I began reading Myranda's FoTR because she started reading mine while we were out of town. I got to the maps and they were YUK.

Now, I'm not sure what set to buy for my grand-daughter that asked for them for her birthday and I haven't ordered hers for that very reason.

Well, you must also keep in mind that I have been looking at my 1970s version maps for nearly 30 years...and I was very attached to them. I was most offended that the lady stuck her name on there. I hope I never meet her, I rank her right up there with Bill Clinton.

The Houghton Mifflin version maps with the movie pic on the front is exact copies of my 1970s maps...which were drawn for the original books in the UK...except a guy went in and made them clearer, larger and divided them up into pieces making it easier to read. That I can accept and be even thankful, with my eyes beginning to go bad with age!

This is an image of the Houghton Mifflin TTT. I love mine. It has a great picture of Aragorn on the front:

You know, I might box up this set that I got for the younger daughter, Myranda, and send them to my granddaughter. Then I could get Myranda a good set. Myranda is truly HobbitHole material and lurks constantly. (Like I used to.)

Many of those on this thread had to weather my original discovery that the maps had been changed in the Ballantine version when I first got a set from Sam's from my husband for my birthday last year. I think some perhaps even felt the earth shake, when I found out that this interloper had re-done the maps and then to add insult to injury, she'd done it back in the 80s and I never knew because I'd just kept and treasured my 70s books. But when the books began to literally disintegrate, Steve got me these copies. Needless to say, after my irrate reaction, he went out to find me another better set. And being the great guy he is...he got me EXACT copies of the ones he'd already got me with the terrible maps!! I literally had to take Matthew to the bookstore and say "See these books, Matthew...tell Daddy "THESE ARE THE ONES!" LOL

It was a dreadful time in my life, but I can talk about it now...
