The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I'm so proud of you, Wneighbor! You handled that situation wonderfully. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Does anyone know the habits of coyotes? Will they be back the same time tomorrow?

Got a gun? Air rifle?

I think the "rules" at FR have changed a bit in a unwritten way. That is why these threads like Hobbit Hole exsit. JR. saw a trend, and went with it. I think that these multipost threads each have their own tone and are allowed because of that tone. Does that make sense? And even though it is not a written rule, it is up to the people on the thread, the tone setters if you will, to monitor. And I am not in any way saying I am one of the tone setters here. I just was voicing my opinion on what I thought the tone of this thread was. I was wrong, and I apologize.

I just got back from taking the dove to the vet. Looks like it had some kind of scarring or growth over it's eye. I think it was a fully feathered youngster, though...it was small and there was no mate nearby. The ones that live in our trees are here year after year. Mourning doves mate for life and stick close together. So I don't think this one had a mate.

I wouldn't think a growth on it's eye would bode well for it...it couldn't fly at all. I suspect it is new from the nest, and hasn't had to fend for itself until now. I felt bad that it kept flying into the side of our house.

My horses so far have been taking the fireworks OK. My dogs on the other hand run for the house. If I don't immediatly let them in they cower some place shivering.

I've never been to an IHOP. I think they have 'em up north, but definitely not out in the boonies.

We have one here in Shrewsbury! I took the kids out to breakfast a few weeks ago.

Hey everyone. Grama went to be with Jesus last night at 7:30. I was by myself with her at the hospital.

Hey WN, I'm glad that you were the one with her when she went home. I'm praying for you. Take whatever time you need. You can fill us in whenever you get back.

You can just think of us as FR's version of "The Lord of the Flies."

Now who wants to be Piggy?

CHIPMUNK FRICASSEE

-2 pounds diced chipmunk (the legs are most of the meat but the breast is good if you have the patience)
-minced garlic
-chopped onion
-hot peppers
-Guinness stout
-butter
-hot pepper flakes
-chicken or possum stock
-peeled and quartered potatoes

This actually tastes a lot like chicken (but still with a difference). It's best made with Rocky Mountain chippers(East Coast chippies are too small) and perhaps served with a nice Sauvignon Blanc. Marinate the chipmunk meat in the garlic, onion, hot peppers, and Guinness. Saute in a skillet with butter, pepper flakes, and salt. Cook quickly until browned. Deglaze the skillet with the stock and put it all into a large saucepan or stockpot along with the marinade and the potatoes. Cover and bake at 275 degrees for two hours. Remove from the oven and, in a separate pan, reduce whatever marinade is left and whisk in six ounces of additional butter. Combine reduced marinade with chipmunk meat and serve.

Now how much meat, really, do you think you can get off of one chipmunk?

So did you leave the dove with the vet then? The wildlife place has some kind of an arrangement with a regular clinic?

Think of it as an appetizer rather than a meal.

Besides, it still conforms with the diet structure of Atkins, correct? LOL!

Clip her wings and keep her with the chickens. I don't think they'll hurt each other!

Our condolences to you. It is a blessing that you were able to be with her at the end, and know that she is at peace.

Take care of yourself, and don't let petty things bother or distract you now.

I'm taking it to a wildlife rescue sponsered vet, per their instructions. See you later.

We have several mourning doves in our backyard. I love their call.

We had one collide with our dining room picture window a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately it did not survive. I don't know if it was dead when it hit the ground, but all I saw later were a bunch of feathers and a leg. I think the neighbor's cat, who loves our yard, decided to have a good meal. I don't like the cat cause it scares away the bunnies that like to come in our yard and eat the weeds. I chase the cat away every time I see it.
