The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Thanks! It's a relatively short trip, just 100 miles there and 100 miles back. But, Rose and I were talking about it this afternoon, and this will be the first trip of this length we've taken in a couple of years.

We're such stay-at-homes! Didn't used to be, but things change.

Heh, I prefer driving to any other mode of travel.

Have a good night!

g'nad: most of the forest fires in Ozarks are leaf fires, running along through the deep leaf litter; just scrape a fire line a 3-4 feet wide and most can be contained but if conditions are right they can run up the "dead wood" ladder, leaves then brush then the small tree thickets then up into the crowns (if enough leaves are still on the branches), a couple a stout leaf rakes and back pack pump are usually all that's needed. But the volunteer fire boys really like driving their brush wagons with pumpers and hoses spraying like crazy (okay it is really a lot of fun-hard work too-but it is fun for a while)

g'nad, you cad, I can't play now!

I am cleaning out the barn from top to bottom! I have to fit two tons of hay in there by Sunday, and there is all kinds of frap in there that doesn't belong. And the unwanted frap is covered with dust, which also has to go!

LOL! Frap, I like that!

Hey 2J, you could teach Josh to say Frap instead of Crap!

Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks) uses a variation of the word "frap" in the movie Apollo 13. Sometime after the explosion, he says "frappin' 8-ball" while referring to the gyroscopic flight guide, after losing his temper.

Yeah - I kinda got on task and I am still going.

Just let the horses in and fed them dinner.... they can watch me move the rest of the stuff around.

I got a big old cabinet last year to keep tools in, and all this time it has been sitting there empty while the tools sat out on pegs and collected dust. Organizing that finally.

Well, I finished my tasks, and I'm watching the replay of Brit Hume before going to bed.

Have to be on the road by 8:00 am tomorrow morning. Not sure if I'll be around at all tomorrow... depends on when we get back, and how well I'm feeling.

Steve went nuts over the muffins. Rarely does he rave over anything I cook (he is admittedly a much better cook than I am) but these went over big.

I'll have to remember them for Entmoot!

Are you going with the family to pick the berries? I tell ya...it was a great set up. I bet it wasn't but two acres of blueberry bushes and the place was packed with people. My 3 pounds cost a little more than $5. Some old fella sat under one of those sideless tent-like jobbers and just weighed them and took the money!

I had a good time, the boys had a blast and it was easy and fun. Except for the stinky dead crawdad! LOL

PS: Tell Jake I said the fat's the best part! I even save my bacon fat! I run it hot through a coffee filter into a canning jar and keep it in the fridge to cook with. My grandmother used to dredge her biscuits in melted bacon fat before she baked them.

I spoke with Lisa's eldest daughter this evening when I was at my mom's house...they candled the eggs yesterday and found 4 that failed to grow a chick. They discarded them. Otherwise, they all look good!

One egg cracked and they had repaired it with bandage tape! It is an experiment to see if it would grow. The membrane under the shell was intact.

I'll let you know when the pipping begins! I do want to incubate some too...but not as many as her, maybe? Maybe a dozen or so? I don't have five kids to help me! LOL

Well, it's been a long hard day. I finished the baby chick's outside box...it looks darling, imo. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Good night everyone. See you tomorrow.
