The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

if I could, I would sit for 6 solid hours watching it all together

I would do the same. It would be lovely that way.

I certainly hope that there would be several intermissions, say every two hours. Let's make a day of it. Besides we'd need 2nd breakfast, 11 eveys, dinner, tea, and supper. (think I forgot a couple)

Plus plenty of time to discuss primitive (and even modern) weapons

SC: indeed, efficiency of armour piercing arrows vs. broadheads as well as the pereniall favorite: Double bitted axes-are they right for you?

I've been playing Age of Empires. However, I'm not sure I like it much. I spend most of my time yelling at my characters. Ooooh! Oooooh! I LOOOOVE Age of Empires! I have AOE II - Age of Kings, and I never get tired of it. I've also got Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds...which is played pretty much the same way...just with Star Wars characters and locations. Let me know if you want to "talk shop" and/or stratergize!

I hope Star Trek is good.

You might get a kick out of this. The other war that goes on at my house - besides the who's'-the-hotter-elf Legolas or Haldir - is if Star Wars heros and Star Trek heros were to go into battle who would win.

Of course, all us well-experienced (okay old) Trek fans know it's Star Trek hands down. But, I just keep having to argue this through with a rebellious teenage girl!

You can see that we have a lack of real excitement in our house.

I agree with Bear regarding the defensive strategy. That's always my first step once establishing a location. When at all possible, use natural defenses (forests, streams, cliffs, etc) to help fortify your encampment.

Of course, if you get too frustrated, use some cheats to completely obliterate your enemies (only once or twice!)...that'll make you feel a LOT better! lol

Can you play AC online?

I checked, and apparently there is support for multiplayer games either with a modem or a direct network connection. I've never done it though, so I'm not sure how good it works!

Are there demos for those games, Bear?

I don't know of any demos, Sam... Alpha Centauri and Age of Empires are both rather old now. In fact, AC was out of print for a while; AoE can usually be found for about $10 now in bargain bins. The other games (Empire Earth, Civilization 3) are both current and pricey ($35-$50, depending on where you buy from.)

Well, good night! Wneighbor had to leave for home, and I'm falling asleep from antihistamines, so I'm off to bed.
