Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Got to go. You might want to ask 2J? My experience is limited the last 10 years to geriatrics

It just seems to me that if the "trigger" can be narrowed down to one specific thing, it's a lot easier to work on resolving it.
At risk of sounding silly, could it be that she feels "suffocated" by the tack and she panics? Like claustrophobia? Does that make sense?
I've seen horses on TV that were broken badly (they were forced / backed into a pen to put the gear on). If that happened to her, the saddling could trigger that bad memory and she freaks out.

No I have never rode her bareback, using that as a diagnostic tool would be difficult because she does it so infrequently considering how often she got saddled. Once a year at first, never more often then 4-5 times a yr at the end. So I would have to ride her bareback for a long time before knowing if that was the cure.
No more often then she does it makes it sound like it was not that dangerous to some, maybe. They were never on her when she slammed herself down on the ground:) I think I would actually feel better about it if she did it more often. Even now, what I think it is could be way off base, because for so long we thought she was just having a bratty moment and didn't pay attention to the "whys" The infrequencies are what makes it so frustrating and the fact that she is SOOOOO good the rest of the time.
I know what you mean about trainers too. One of the reasons I think it may be in her neck is for discipline the person that had her before I got her would saddle her up in the morning, cross tie her on short ties so that her front feet were barely touching the ground which means her weight was resting on her neck, and she was only 2, and leave her ALL day. She was also roping at age 2, turning cows. That's alot to ask of a young horse.
I know, I know, that all sounds bad, and it is, I just didn't know these details when I bought her. I knew she had problems, but I didn;t know everything.

The saddle was custom built for her. I was just a little proud of her when I got her:)

And, you're from California? I think you're our first Californian! The first Californian? How can that possibly be? It's a pretty darn crowded state! lol!
Thanks for the kind welcome. :-D

Well, if it were a general phobia about saddling, it would be all the time.... It is possible that it is a specific source of pain where it doesn't happen unless all 20 variables fall into place at the same time... Specific saddle placement, specific level of weight and condition (in the horse) that causes it to fit a certain way, specific kink in her neck when she sleeps a particular way at night... and all those things happen at the same time only once in a blue moon.

Kids will always find a way to embarrass you!
When my nieces were very young (still in diapers) they proudly boasted to a roomful of dinner guests that their "mommy wore diapers too!"
One of them made a dash for the bathroom and brought out my aunt's box of Kotex. *groan*

LOL, one thing about homeschoolers they are not bashful:)
I'll let you know tomorrow, if I could ride Sat. I like saving Sat. to do things with Mack, but we usually don't get started with stuff with him till afternoon.
If you went, I would suggest jeans tee shirt and boots. The boots are not because of riding, although they are safest, but because blackberry bushes are favorite hideouts for copperheads. But if your game tennis shoes are OK. Probably bring a long sleeve shirt, because black berry bushes have horrible thorns.
Yeah the gallon bags would work, we could then put them in like a wal-mart bag to hang on the horn to bring them back.
Is tomorrow soon enough to let you know? And is early morning OK. say 8-9:00. Beat the heat that way also.

Hadn't heard of it, no! Named after "I Was a Male War Bride", I assume?Yes, another favorite CG movie I neglected to mention!
Here's a link to the Warbride board, and another to the best Cary Grant web site around.

Hey you Atkins people, would you recommend one of his books for me?
The only one my local library had was some Anti-aging diet book. If I have to request one interlibrary then I want to make sure it's the right one.
Thank you in advance.

Ha!
Hey, I made the babies a little tiny chicken tractor...just a box of leftover siding from when we fixed our leak and some 2x4s nailed together 10" tall with chicken wire on top. They can stay in there with their water and scratch around for fun...gets them outside and into a bit of sun.

Being that it doesn't happen all the time, it must be exceedingly frustrating when it DOES happen! *sigh*
Maybe it's a slipped disk sort of thing. It just goes out and BOOM - instant pain.
