The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Okay, I have known since Tom went to Germany that I need a good German map. Normally one of my bright spots is geography but I obviously don't know enough about German places other than large cities and geological stuff. Is Ramstein close to Frankfurt too? Jill and Tom live on base at Weisbaden but he was stationed at Wachenheim. Anybody know those places? I can locate them on a map now but related them to no other bases.

Sounds like you got out when you could anyway. :-) Jill seems to think the only place some of Tom's guys want to go is into the nearest pub.

Italy sounds intriguing. They were actually supposed to be going to Italy when they went to Germany. But, he got promoted and then the only choice was Germany. (probably happy with Germany due to promotion :-))

Pictures are nice, they liven us up!!!

Funny thing - Jill sends me photos of every place they go - but pictures locally, around where they live.

I did meet people who never went off base...might as well have been on an island. I did what I could, yeah, pretty much! And we definitely went to plenty of places in the local area...just not a lot of long distance travel in Europe.

Italy was very nice...I had originally hoped to go there rather than Germany, but after having been both places, I'm glad I ended up in Germany. Italy was kind of a culture shock for me. ;-)

Morning everyone!

I haven't read or seen Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas either. :(

OT - awesome Frodo pics! I like the log pic the best. He fits in so perfectly there!

Corin - check the oven.

On to breakfast folkses...

MMMmmm. Glad I found all this bacon in the oven. Nice and toasty warm.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas will be obtained soon for me Ruthy. Just to see what it's all about. Something about being in the desert with a lawyer and telling him about hallucinations or something intrigues me.

I think Jill was really excited about Italy because she had a friend in Jr. High who was 1/2 Italian, born and raised there till 7th grade. They invited us several times to go back to Italy with them to visit in the summer. It wasn't ever in this single mom's budget to do that but we always wanted to. Jill wanted to see those places she'd heard so much about.

Okay, I'm finally getting off to do the plumbing work. Be back when I know something. It'll be fixed or I'll be looking for help.

Me too! I'll be checking to see if it's in the second hand book store. :)

Good luck with the leak. Hope it's easy to fix.

WOW!

Thanks for breakfast!

Did you see yesterday's "Finest" thread?

It was a tribute to the freeper "WHOEVER" who died last week due to cancer.

I forgot to ping everyone over to it. but I don't think It's too late to go over and see what was done on that thread.

It saddens me to hear we've lost one of our own. It always does.

It's strange to feel grief for someone I've never met, but FR has a way of making us family, albeit a strange one.

I'll check it out, Pippin.

Leak located. GRRRR.

Have I mentioned this month how much I miss living at the old place? A house built in 1905 that was so practical NOTHING was in a place that was hard to get to. This leak, in that house would involve removing a couple of feet of metal underpinning, sitting in the yard and tightening a joint. Is it revealing that I still know the routes of all the plumbing in that house?

In the new house, I need to be a skinny hobbit. I am neither. 5'10" does not fold well into a small space to squeeze even a couple of feet into the crawl space to reach the thing to tighten it. It's not that far back - but it's behind a whole web or other plumbing and joints. Can't get around those easy.

They did the same thing with cars. It's a sneaky way of ensuring that the owner can do less and less his/herself.
