The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

It actually wouldn't be that bad of a drive because I work in Providence.

Unfortunately, I can't make either day. We have pre-registration on the 30th, and orientation on the 1st (for starting July students), and I need to be at both events.

Curses and crashes!

Speaking of brunch...

I woke up a little bit ago, and Jess had made me a splendid bacon and mushroom omlette, complete with biscuits (w/ honey), and fresh coffee & juice!

Man...Father's Day needs to happen more than once a year! lol

How about Wed. the 25th or Thurs the 26th? Are either of those days OK for either of you? We don't leave until very early in the am on Friday, and we get back VERY late on Sunday.

Good morning!

My youngest has a cold, so we stayed home while Steve took my oldest to church. Matthew got him a cedar bird feeder with some seed...Joshua got him a pair of hand grass clippers, and I got him a big cultivator for the garden.

They were running late for church, so I did make my husband breakfast...just a bowl of Wheaties though! LOL

Good morning! The teenagers are out in the coop now...they'll only sleep in their box at night, till they get a bit more feathers on them.

The babies are just two golden balls of fluff that sleep all the time...

Did the boys have fun painting it? I saw Joshua was wearing some of it! ;o)

They both have paint all over them. White Kilz primer. It is unbelievably hard to wash off and Matthew still went to church with it in his hair! LOL

I didn't let them help with the grey or red paint...I wanted it to look smooth and nice...hopefully if it looks ok, the neighbors won't give me too much grief about having four chickens! LOL

It's almost completely finished...I'm just putting the finishing touches on it...painting the door and such. It's going to have a "cross bar" in the top right hand front corner to attach a hanging waterer to...and the shade cloth right there will just unhook...I can just unhook it, lift out the waterer and refill it, then lower it back down, then re-hook the shade cloth. Does that make sense?

Good morning to you too! I think the reason you will get away with having four chickens is the beautiful coop.

How about Wed. the 25th or Thurs the 26th?

Those should work fine for me as well.

I'm going to tell all of them that they are Matthew's expensive show chickens. I don't know if it would make a difference, but it might make them think "Well, if they are expensive chickens, these folks are going to make sure they don't nasty up the place."

The coop will have removable skids on the back...you lift up slightly, put the skids on then pull it by the front...if we move it frequently, it won't get nasty all in one place and the grass won't die.

Chicken poop dries really fast...so if we just keep the coop moving around the yard, it should be ok.

And water the poop in.... good fertilizer!

You never know.... with their wings clipped they may be able to be loose a lot of the time and not get out of the yard.... that will minimze their impact on the little area.

See y'all later, I am off to a lavish brunch at the Inn at Gig Harbor with my dad and brother.... no doubt followed by considerable lounging and digesting at the beach house.

I'm here, off and on. I'm working on the coop and getting chicken ready to fry (ha!) for lunch all at the same time. Josh has been painting the cross bar for the waterer in the middle of my kitchen floor (it will be covered with shade cloth). Everything has to be painted though, so it will last.

ecurbh and Suzi, unfortunately those dates don't work for me either. :-( I'm straight out insanely busy until the first full week of July. I think you may just have to go on w/o me...

2JM - If I didn't know any better, I'd swear your hubby likes gardening! lol

I must say I'm a tad jealous though, we just simply don't have any room here for a decent garden, so we're stuck with boring old houseplants!

I'm just getting ready to start grilling and introduce Frodo to hickory smoke...I think. Do they hickory smoke meat in Middle Earth?

One of the places I took Frodo was Zepp's Music This is the place that has the open bluegrass jams. I saw on their website that they have a beginners/intermediate instruction type session. Think I've got my sister interested in going to one of those. :)

That's the plan...to let them out when we are working in the back yard. They'll know where home is and go back to it in the evening to roost. Then we just shut the door.

That's the only way we'd be able to keep four chickens in that one little coop. It was only designed for 2. We still may end up building another one just like it.

I'm going to paint grass and flowers along the back bottom of the coop...with sun and clouds too...I'll post a pic when I get done.
