The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I think it is a fun little space!

I can't wait to use this one...

I think those are the same people that made this LoTR game. Sierra Software.

They have an advertisement on the back of the intstruction booklet of LoTR for "Empire Earth". Is that the same thing?

I started playing Myst once. I got too aggravated because I was more interested in the story than in doing their stupid puzzles.

I have very little patience with games, for the most part. I'll be obsessed for two or three days, and then lose interest. And I'm not good at ANYTHING that requires good reflexes!

Wow! That little line brought back a flurry of images from TTT!

Poor thing. It broke my heart when he started to cry after being caught by Frodo and Sam (at Sting's point).

I couldn't figure out Myst for the life of me. I didn't even know where I was supposed to end up. I wasn't gonna read a library of books to figure it our either!

I like the part where Tony Curtis (all in white, doncha know) walks all through that pie fight and doesn't get any whipped cream on himself until the end (pie right in the face.) I wonder how many takes that took to film.

AOE USED to be made by Microsoft. Still is, I think. Empire Earth might be similar, though - there are lots of copycat games. I think the original AOE is fairly old - came out in '97 or so? But it's still available, and that's what I got. It was in the cheapie bin at Staples, so I thought I'd give it a shot. ;-)

You should see the LIST of moves and what to push when. UGH!

I wasn't kidding when I said that it took a half hour just to learn how to move around Bag End! I kepy using the mouse buttons by accident and beating my furniture with my walking stick! LOL!

Can I bash TNG?

One time I got a TNG game (it was on sale) just so I could have the aliens take target practice on Ryker (they wouldn't let me have Worf shoot him.)

I was crushed by the look Smeagol was giving to Sam and Frodo in Osgiliath while Sam was giving his speech. *sniff!*

I just keep telling guys to do things I don't want them to do. See, you have to select a person or people with the LEFT mouse button, then click on something with the RIGHT to tell them what to do or where to go. i.e. you can click on someone and then right click on a tree to have them chop wood for buildings...but in general I click in the wrong places or on the wrong people.

Not only that, but they don't do ANYTHING on their own, for the most part! So even if I have the whole village surrounded by soldiers, if another group raids while I'm watching another part of the game board, the soldiers will just stand there and let the raiders destroy town. They WILL fight back if they're attacked, but won't help one another automatically. Drives me nuts!

I've been playing Age of Empires.

At work? Already?

Well, here's what I do... pick out a suitably sized area for your "civilization", then, when you can build walls, build a wall all around the area, with only one or two open spaces to act as a "gate". Put up towers to defend the "gates", as well as several places around the wall (on the inside of the wall). Then, develop your technology as fast as you can. Keep a small force of soldiers, archers, and horsemen on hand to respond to attacks. The walls should act to slow down any attack so that you can respond to it in time; if you focus your defense on the "gates" then you should be able to stop them before they can overrun your buildings. Make sure to keep your walls in good repair though, and upgrade them whenever you can!

Age of Empires was my favorite game for a long time, until Age of Empires 2 came out. Now I play Empire Earth a lot... it's by the same designer as AoE, but he's with a different company now.

Not playing at work! Just have been playing at home!

I haven't done the wall thing...maybe I'll try that. I think maybe I haven't been making enough villagers. I'm so worried about getting my...well...getting clobbered that I end up right away starting in on soldiers, which probably isn't the best plan. I'll try your way and see if I do a little better!

Is AOE like the Civilization games? I'm playing Civ 3 right now and really like it. Have you played the Civ games? If so, what are the differences, similarities? In your opinion, which is better?
