Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

The context is... philosophical, talking about people who say trees are just trees and stars are flaming balls of gas. Tolkien is defending stories and myths as our creative (divine in origin) birthright...
I think this verse explains it. And the poem name is 'Mythopoeia'.
"The heart of man is not compound of lies,
but draws some wisdom from the only Wise,
and still recalls him. Though now long estranged,
man is not wholly lost nor wholly changed.
Dis-graced he may be, yet is not dethroned,
and keeps the rags of lordship once he owned,
his world-dominion by creative act:
not his to worship the great Artefact,
man, sub-creator, the refracted light
through whom is splintered from a single White
to many hues, and endlessly combined
in living shapes that move from mind to mind.
Though all the crannies of the world we filled
with elves and goblins, though we dared to build
gods and their houses out of dark and light,
and sow the seeds of dragons, 'twas our right
(used or misused). The right has not decayed.
We make still by the law in which we're made."

I figured if citronella repelled mosquitoes, eating/drinking citrus should too. I thought I read somewhere that it did.
To: JenB
Thanks. It's beautiful. Where'd you find it?
To: Sam Cree
A friend of mine - Classics scholar and Oxford denizen - sent it to me this morning. We have discussed Art and Stories in relation to Christianity, including Lewis' and Tolkien's views on such, often and this just fit in with our theories.

Yes, makes sense...ever notice how you smell when you drink alot of grapefruit juice? Not bad, but maybe it really helps.
To: JenB
Yes, didn't know that was only half, thanks, JenB.

Banana draws 'em. I avoid bananas during skeeter season.

Raw garlic - Day 2. It's getting better. :) Any reaction from the co-workers?
I forgot to go get any citrus today.

Seriously, here's hoping that Jr does well tonight. He had a pretty good game. Struck out and stole first AND second on a dropped ball. The guy right after him did the same thing. But we still lost.
One of the mom's said when I got they're "they're all distracted tonite..." Took all I could do to not say "it's because they were watching movies all day..." But I dint (even though her kid was one of the ones who opted for the dance).
I know. Take a deep breath. Let it go....

Why is it that kids are being pushed to grow up fast yet they aren't considered "grown" until their 20's? I figger it's because we try to make them "adults" at 12 and when they're 22 and moved out of the house, they realized how much they missed being 12.
