Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Okay....some warm bread with honey please! You got it darlin'. That's my favorite way to have it myself. Although, I passed tonight. I do have fresh honey from a local beekeeper. Also, homemade preserves - peach/habanero, apple/jalapeno, pear/apricot, apricot/habanero, pear butter and a variety of herb jellies and wine jellies. All homemade right here also. Unfortunately margerine is store-bought - no home-churned butter. I'll try to do better another day.

He was pretty far left/international. Roddenberry espoused marxist ideals, but I don't have any direct evidence that he was a card carrying member.

Sure. I'm too young to have watched the original series. The rest were okay -- except DS9 was excellent. I knew it would be good when someone mentioned they had to go to "waste extraction"/the bathroom.
Seriously, the political intrigue, plenty of space battles, characters with problems, and extended story arcs made DS9 a rare treat. One storyline dealt with a rogue government agency within the Federation. (The series didn't get good until half way through the 3rd season.)
Some have said DS9 is a knock-off of Babylon-5. I'll have to wait for the next round of DVD price drops to find out... as I don't have cable or a television.

DS9 was my favorite Trek series as well! I am also a huge fan of Babylon 5. The two series had some rough similarities (both set on a space station, strong female second-in-command, etc.) but were different enough that I wouldn't call DS9 a rip-off. Rather, I would instead call it one of those strange coincidences that seem to happen in Hollywood, like when two or three movies about, oh, say, pirates, or meteors hitting Earth, are released in the same summer.

The first season DVDs are scheduled to be released in February -- and then 1 season every other month.
$100 per season is a bit steep -- especially for the first two seasons. :-P
