The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

The southwest is too much in my blood.

I spent my first summer out of college on a short term mission trip working at SW Indian School in Phoenix and on the Navajo reservation up hear Four Corners. I developed a particular fondness for Navajo "fry bread" cooked over an open flame.

I love the SW. I would give up the coast if I could live in Scottsdale or Phoenix.

I would say I feel like a kid for this, except I know so many adults doing the same thing.

I think it's great. I remember at the last party, my wife took Jr. Several people from our church were there. An artist at our church said she stayed away 'cause she thought we'd have folks there protesting. Nah, they were all there buying the book.

But for our children's clothing and toy sale, consigners are told "no Harry Potter, no Pokemon...and there's a list of a few others..."

Jr. went as Harry Potter one year for Halloween. Then he came on to church for a rehearsal for our Christmas production...in costume.

LOL! Good for him.

At our former church, there was one woman who criticized my mother because she allowed us to read Harry Potter. At the time my mother had not read the books. She had allowed me to make the decision over whether they were suitable. Basically she's trusted me that way for years. Anyway, this woman's children were the worst brats around, but our mother was falling down on the job because we read Harry Potter.

So I turned her into a newt. ;-p

A handy tip for all FReepers everywhere: never try to cook and web-browse at the same time. Especially if your kitchen and your computer are on opposite ends of the house.

First batch of bacon came out a little more crispy than I like it...

I'd like for it to be off. I don't really like powdered lemonade mix.

See, this is why they invented microwave dinners.

By the way - I just feel like I have to brag - it's official now. I have lost 30 pounds and 2 sizes since March.

Only another....er, several months... to go!

But, I don't like microwaved bacon... and you can't do eggses over easy in a microwave, either... < /whine >

Oh, well, the bacon was still good. Just not as good as it might have been if I hadn't over-crisped it.

I love the Navajo res. Absolutely love it. Had some good chums in college who were Navajo. Wonderful people. If I could go back I'd live between Flagstaff and the GC or somewhere in the 96 Hills. (Kinda due north of the Catalinas.) Phoenix is a pit, imho and I think the Scottsdale crowd is a bit snobby for my taste, but then my goal is to be a hermit way out in the middle of nowhere. Just haven't convinced hubby yet... :(

Yes, well, there are downsides to microwaves.

Microwave popcorn, now there's a wondrous invention.

Just the thought of the heat there makes me sweat and feel exhausted. I spent high school summers there working for my grandpa.

Yes, will agree with you there... I remember how we used to make popcorn when I was little, with hot oil in a popcorn popper... lots of bother.

LOL! There were no flames involved, and the bacon was still edible! :)
