The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

We're going to be sorry to disappoint you Corin. We know you're planning to be surrounded by beautiful people. But, you're just going to have to accept us.

You aren't getting your webcam up for that are you?

LOL! No, we had some good friends (a married couple) who moved to Atlanta a number of years ago. I always thought it would be neat to do a webcam chat with them now and then; better and cheaper than a long-distance phone call. But, I never set up the cam because we always had a dial-up connection.

Now, that couple is separated and on the way to divorce (sigh). But, could still use the cam for quick photos, etc.

Er... I look like an Elf. A short, dumpy, plain Elf with glasses, mind, but an Elf nonetheless!

Got your campus picked out yet?

I'm not crazy-looking enough for Austin, yet.

We have a guy who stands on the corner of 6th Street and Congress Ave. (one of the major crossroads downtown) on a little stand, with a paper crown on his head. He doesn't say anything... just stands there on his stand with his hands behind his back, surveying his domain. I call him "The King of Congress Avenue". He's one of the more normal street people in Austin.

A popular local motto here is "Keep Austin Weird". Stores here sell t-shirts with that logo on it.

I'm really tryin' to figure out why they're in such a hurry for their kids to grow up. These are the people who, when their kids are juniors and seniors, will rent hotel rooms for their kids on prom night and will let them go unsupervised to the beach for a week after school is out. Seems like in the old days we were still able to get in trouble without our parents making the reservations.

Agreed.

I would no more have thought of letting Myranda go running off and doing something inappropriate last weekend than I have for the rest of her life. What a concept.

But, after 22 years, I'm still trying to figure out if aliens possessed my parents. The same people that my older-younger brother and I had for parents, those same people, actually gave my baby brother a one week trip to Hawaii for graduation. His girlfriend's parents gave her the same one week trip to Hawaii. UMMMM. Mom said I had a dirty mind. Because she said they had separate rooms in the hotel. ????

I got a camera for graduation. My older/younger brother got a watch.

Yeah, and that thing they say about elves and being ageless. Well, um... it doesn't mean there aren't any wrinkles and sagging body parts.

And you're right Jen, they forget to tell you that ageless doesn't mean eyesight stays 20/20. Glasses are common among us elves. Some of us need one pair to drive and a different pair to read.

Hee... my dad's parents did something similar. Raised him and his two brothers strictly, then this other son came along two months before I did, and wham! they treated that kid like the crown prince. He was so spoiled and nasty as a kid. Thankfully he joined the Air Force and has become a responsible member of society.

I think parents sometimes give up parenting after a while because they get tired of it. Glad for your daughter's sake that you didn't!

I miss Austin. I felt comfortable there.

I feel like a misfit here.

It's the instructions that get messy.

Hmm, they don't happen to include whipped cream and/or chocolate sauce, do they?

Oh, it is.

However I'm seeing myself thirty pounds lighter than I was in March, so I'm ok with that.

Good night, all! See you late tomorrow morning!

Glad for your daughter's sake that you didn't!

Thank you. Me too. My baby brother was a brat. And Myranda isn't (most of the time)

I didn't really start having a relationship with that brother until about 4 years ago. He was just too difficult.

I know what you mean about Austin... I know it's a liberal haven and all, but I like the weirdness. It's endlessly fascinating. And no one looks funny at Rose and me when we go out together.

My gosh. Ya'll are just normal there. There is nothing at all not normal about ya'll.

There used to be a lady I just loved that was one of the flower people at the corner of Lamar and Koenig Lane. There was a 7-11 there and that was that lady's place. She always had different colors of hair. Not one color. Multiple, like patchwork neon multi. It changed often. And it was very long but she would rat it up in weird ways. Then she would paint her body. And had pretty funky clothing to go along with that. But once you've seen the hair patterns and body paint it was like the clothing was just nothing. She was a riot. Would stand there yelling at passing cars too. But, if you stopped she was fun to talk to. Just because of all this, when I did buy flowers I would go to her. (but then we only lived just north of 183 on Lamar at the time anyway so it wasn't far.)

A lot of vibration stuff hurts my carpal tunnel too. So I got some gloves with Sorbothane pads from magidglove.com. The price is reasonable. I used to have some biking gloves with Sorbothane in them, but they seem hard to find now.

The gloves help a lot, and I wear my wrist brace underneath it. The gloves are a bit thick and clunky, but they help a lot.

Ya'll are just normal there.

More than you know... we have a game we play, when we go out shopping or to a restaraunt, or just out driving around town. We count interracial couples. Our highest count has reached double digits (11 or 12) on just a single afternoon. It's a rare trip out that we don't see more than one.
