The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

LOL I'd love to have seen it.

My dad used to chop the heads off snakes when I was a kid...a shame because they probably were just plain old king snakes...harmless and good to have around, but he did it anyway. He would give me the headless snake and I would carry it all over the place, with it's muscle contractions wrapping it all around my wrist. I would walk over and show it to my elderly neighbor just to listen to her screech! (I think in hind sight she was putting on a "bit" of a show for me, but I loved it.)

Mornin' Sam!

Back in high school, my friend Steve had 2 pythons a Boa (Luci) and a Burmese (Reign) that he purchased as babies. When they were little, they ate mice and rats, so that never bothered me.

By the time we graduated, they were both over 5 feet long and eating rabbits. I'd go with Steve to the farms in Homestead to buy rabbits and chickens for the snakes. It is truly a scary sight to watch pythons do their thing! *shiver* I'd always walk away.

One day, Steve asked me to get Reign from her cage since it was feeding time. He would lay out a sheet across the floor and Reign would be set down on one end and Steve would hold the rabbit on the other. This particular day though, Reign caught the scent of the rabbit before I even opened the cage, so when I lifted the top, she sprang out and locked her sights on my face.

Knowing they wait for movement before striking, I had to stay perfectly still and wait for Steve to figure out something was wrong. He walked in, already complaining about how long it was taking, when he realized what was happening. He told me "Don't move" (DUH!!!) and had to crawl around the back of the cage, jump up and grab Reign by the neck from behind.

Crikey! Ever since then, I don't muck with snakes, no matter what a beauty they are! Danger! Danger ! Danger! </ steve irwin>

Morning texasgal!

We are used to the comings and goings of Hole Dwellers, so no worries. Just be sure to try to check in once in a while to let us know all is well! :)

May I add you to the breakfast ping list or do you prefer not to be pinged?

Back in high school, my friend Steve had 2 pythons a Boa (Luci) and a Burmese (Reign) that he purchased as babies. When they were little, they ate mice and rats, so that never bothered me.

Heh. My cousin's wife had a pet Boa. She'd sit and let the thing slither around her shoulders, etc. Their kids were pretty little then and my cousin didn't like the idea of the snake being around them.

So one day he poisoned a mouse and fed it to the snake. His wife never knew why the snake died.

They aren't married anymore...

That's a scary story, Ruthy, I'm glad it didn't get you. Imagine feeding rabbits to a pet snake.

I was pretty scared of snakes as a kid, not so much anymore, though, except those really bad ones they have in Asia.

But I'm allergic to horses, and I believe the anti venom uses a horse serum base, so I'm not sure I can have it, if a poisonous one ever bites me.

I like the little charcoal colored snake with a pink ring around its neck that lives near my front door.

Pretty series, actually. A friend's special needs son, surgery friday, complications, surgeon "out of pocket", hospial politics ... yada yada yada ..

Fortunately, she and I are both in the Medical Industry, so we knew what buttons to push to get it taken care of. Just makes me wonder how the folks that don't know the ins and outs manage with hospital politics .. eeek
