The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I don't mind a little mayo, but I do avoid it when I can. It's a mental thing I have against it! Feels greasy and gloppy to me, so if there's a lot on the sandwich or in the tuna, I can't eat it unless I can scrape some of it off. I told you I'm a weirdo!

Now I'm thinking about a bacon cheese burger!

BTW, even whole wheat breads must be avoided on Atkins?

Omigoodness that is so true! There has been some quiet research into that very thing- surveying period cookbooks and such. In fact I recall reading that the guy who invented the EKG was actually laughed at. The doctors of the day saw no use for the thing- no one had heart attacks!

I have stumbled onto some very interesting research and an organization that carries on in his name- a dentist named Dr. Weston A. Price. (www.westonaprice.org) I'm sure I've spoken of him before here, but he traveled the world documenting "primitive" cultures eating their native diets. He found no chronic illness, no degenerative diseases, no obesity, and interestingly, next to no cavities. When he compared those people to others of the same racial heritage that had switched to a more western diet of white flour and sugar he found illness everywhere. Fascinating stuff and very damning to the standard American diet. We are eating ourselves to death- at our doctors' suggestion!

Start drinking lots of water. Worth a try. Just don't expect results over night. I have lost 20lbs since Feb. seems slow to me, but it's something. I'd like to loose about 10 more.

When you're in the induction stage, yes. I never got much beyond that.

Heavy on the mayo though.

Ewww! I don't like mayo!

Meats and veggies doesn't sound bad, though...actually, when I'm "being good" that's pretty close to the way I eat...I like to come home from work and cook a piece of meat and have it with a salad for dinner. Or soup, which generally doesn't have much in the way of carbs, either. Do like taters and onions, though, both of which I think are on the bad list.

And ditching the bun sounds good, too! My family makes fun of me 'cause a lot of times when we have hamburgers or the like, I eat 'em without the bun. Those buns are nasty, anyway!

RE the working hard, that's true, exercise makes lots of difference in what you can eat.

But I differ with you to some degree on that, I strongly feel that diet has significantly more effect on one's size than exercise. There were people in those days that didn't work so hard physically, and I doubt they had to worry about obesity as much as we do now.

To some extent I am speaking from experience. Having always been somewhat vain about my size, I've pretty much always been doing something to keep weight off.

For quite a few years, I kept to a low fat diet. And I had to do a tremendous amount of exercise while on it, and even then, at times, it was a struggle. These days, just avoiding sugar and watching starch, and eating as much fat as I wish, I stay thinner, even without exercising at all.

I'm glad you chose to go with the diet, Corin. No need to go under the knife unless you absolutely have to, IMHO.

I'm going to buy a case of WalMart water this weekend!

For now, a bacon cheeseburger san bread and a bottle of Zephryhills will do nicely. :)

Too many cultural choices, too little time.

The Virginia Air and Space Museum is showing The Matrix Reloaded on IMAX!

Nickel Creek is here on July 1st.

The Sound of Music sing-along is here later this month.

Lorna Luft will be here singing "Songs My Mother Taught Me"...

In other news, the Mrs. tells me we have a picnic to go to on Sunday. Grrrr....I've been planing for two months to take the family to King's Dominion this Sunday. It's our first "free" day. And now this...sigh...

WOW! No bread at all. *shudder*

The way my Cuban family eats bread, that would be considered sacreligious!

In the beginning, yes. You're forcing your body to burn the fat you have. If you ate the bread, your body would have to bother with metabolizing and probably turning it to fat.

In the meantime, there are some quick-bread substitutes. The Atkins-brand products are very yummy, but horridly expensive. They're also made of soy- so there's two reasons to be sparing.

We're in our maintainence phase and eating about 70g carb/day. Which, once you start paying attention to them, is quite a few. We eat whole wheat stuff now, but things that I bake from scratch. There are ways of preparing it that increases the digestability of the stuff and makes more nutrients available. It also improves the flavor such that no one will recognize it as whole wheat. If you want recipes, let me know.

We're gonna see 'em on July 15th. Can't wait! I saw them once before and really enjoyed the show, though until then, I wasn't sure I liked their style of music. It was a wonderful concert!

I haven't lost more in poundage since I started working out

that's due to developing muscles...what you are loosing in fat weight, you are picking in muscle weight

Same here. I looooove mashed potatoes. Luckily, I've been going without them for years now, because they are a pain to make for just a single serving.

I use the extra to make tater pancakes or gnocci.

I'd never heard of them until you posted the pic of the elf dude here. Then I saw them on CMT when I was working out (see exercise also brings cultural awareness).

Wife had talked about seeing Lorna Luft. That would be cool. But I saw her a number of years ago in Guys and Dolls.

I think we'd enjoy Nickel Creek more. That's right before my birthday...I could start hinting...

Mmmm...tater pancakes! Haven't had those in a while! Mom used to make 'em for us...good sweet (with powdered sugar or syrup) or with ketchup - sometimes she'd put onion in them if we were going to have them that way.

I see!

So sticking with meats, cheeses and leafy green veggies plus no sugar or flour should start me on the right path. more or less? Correct?

I'll have to start trying Splenda in my coffee.

Well, in the interest of science, keep on.

OK!

I've gotten less skeeter bites givning up bananas for the summer, fewer still by eating a lot of citrus. Citrus + pineapple seems to cut 'em still.....more tests needed. :)
