Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Splenda is the best sugar sub. IMO. Rather expensive though.

For us, it has been a godsend. It, more than anything else, forced us to
think about the food we were eating. My husband I both had long commutes and ate convenience foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I rationalized that as long as it was 'low-fat' it was fine. We both packed on the pounds and had no energy.
I now force myself to cook. We are lean and happy. I have discovered a whole new realm of 'health food', namely real food, the kind our grandparents grew healthy on. I thought it would be a drudgery but it's not. It is invigorating and fun. I love it. God bless Dr. Atkins.

I lived in blissful ignorance of what I was missing until Glen got DSL at his mother's house. Now, I just sigh wistfully....yearning for the time I can get over there and surf in style!
My morning posts are just me being lazy and not wanting to answer each and every post I've missed (on this lousy dial-up!). I just comment on everyone at once! LOL!

I have real mixed feelingas about Elijah's apparent girlfriend from the MTV awards! But with all the blonde bombshells he could probably get, I guess I am pleased that she looks like a normal person.

When I was talking about the starving reaction, I meant my current diet of eating 2 small meals a day. Omigoodness- I misread that completely. I'm sorry. Yes! Stop abusing yourself. Start nourishing yourself. And honestly, if Atkins isn't your cup of tea, there are other low-carb programs: Suzanne Sommers, Schwarzbein, protein power, etc. There's no real secret to any of them, and they ought not have to have that "low-carb" label. It's simply a truly balanced way of eating. It's only freakish and unhealthy to the low-fat dictocrats and vegetarians.

I'm sitting here dreaming of food!
I haven't had anything to eat all day, except for one piece of Godiva chocolate my office neighbor dropped off 2 hours ago.
Should I get a tuna melt on whole wheat? A BLT? Decisions, decisions!

I think it's possible that during the 1800's heart problems and obesity were not so endemic. Folks ate tons of fat and lard, too. But not much sugar, especially compared to today's rate of sugar consumption.

My feelings aren't mixed at all!

I think if you really don't have that much weight too lose, drinking water is the trick.
We discoved Sams Choice water at Wal-Mart. It's cheap and the best bottled water I've tried. I buy about 6 cases a wk for just myself and my husband. I haven't drank anything but that now for about 6 months. LOL..I've wondered what our trash man thinks? I mean we literally fill up trash bags with these empty water bottles.

They also worked really hard. If you are working fields, or walking everywhere and not just sitting at a computer all day, I think you can eat whatever you want.

I think low fat diets actually make most people gain weight. My neighbor is on one since he had a heart attack. The guy is huge and obese now, which he wasn't before, and has now had another heart attack. I know he can't keep it up like that.
To: Lil'freeper
I also have to learn how to get up off my butt and exercise!!!
My newest "idea" is to go swimming every weekend for at least 3 hours. I'm always looking to multi-task and this way, I can get a much needed tan at the same time.

Get a tunamelt on lettuce leaf (fewer carbs, you see). BLTs may not hold you very long and since you 'can't' eat the bread, you'd have to get two. Heavy on the mayo though. OR, my favorite fast food is to get a big sloppy burger with a couple of patties, veggies and bacon and cheese and go to town with a knife and fork. Gotta toss the bun- that white flour **** doesn't have any nutrients for you anyway. It's a waste of molecules.
Also, start some research. Just about all of Atkins' work is online for free at www.atkinscenter.com.

A diet is a temporary thing, this is a lifelong change in eating habits. Absolutely. I'm well aware that even if/when I reach my ideal weight that I will still have to be very aware of what I'm eating. Hopefully (especially since we signed a three-year contract with the gym) I'll keep up the working out. I haven't lost more in poundage since I started working out (partially because I was off the diet), but I've toned up some muscles and can definitely feel that I'm stronger, especially when I'm swimming.
Before I started the program I'm on now, I'd been thru just about everything (except Weight Watchers, I refuse to get on a scale in front of other people). I'd had moderate, but no long-term successes. Then a friend told me about this program.
I don't know if I've mentioned this, but I was vey close to going ahead with the gastric bypass (yes, I do need to lose that much). I'd talked to the people that do it, and was set up to go for my first counseling session. Then I read their materials. They described the diet I would have to follow after the surgery to maintain the weightloss. I looked at it and realized that, if I wasn't doing that now, I wasn't going to do it after surgery.

Heh.... I am not even sure it's a girlfriend really, because it is from that czech site and I can't understand their captions... he is just holding her kinda close for it to be a fan or a sister, but maybe!

I need to lose around 15 pounds. Residual baby fat mostly that settled around the tummy and thighs.
It's the toughest to get rid of!

Once you loose weight on Atkins though, you have to eat that way forever to keep it off. If you go back to eating more carbs you gain back twice what you took off. So it is actually a life long way of eating.
