Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Even a dog would have to be trained to warn, but not attack snakes like that. I'd be nervous about a dog like Gidget or a shepherd that has a lot of prey drive.

I tell ya, I feel extremely safe, even having you just 3 hours awaythanks 2JM... I appreciate that... but yer pretty handy with a box fan yerself...

we're torn on a dog... breed... inside or outside...

It's not like we live in a dangerous place, after all. Well, it's all relative, but I don't think there is any place that is free of dangers.... but growing up with a housefull of kids, one has to weigh the likelihood of all the dangers.
I think it sounds real fun and real doable to have a moot shooting day Jen! I have a couple real good learning guns, and I am sure g'nad and Sam have something appropriate!

Why is inside-outside a different dog?

I meant, does it come in the house or not...
To: JenB
Guns have a potential for danger, as do other implements that we use, such as table saws, gas ovens, cars, etc., yet they are, as you say, useful. They can save your life.
Understanding and respecting them makes them safe, like anything else.
FWIW, as I guess you know, our founding fathers thought alot of firerarms, and considered their ownership a citizen's right.

Who isn't sure whether it should come in the house? You or the missus?

He keeps a S&W 629 loaded with shotshells in case the dogs ever kick up a rare Missasauga rattler. It's a 12-inch snake with weak venom, but he figures the dogs would probably try to play with it.
"Practical firepower" for me is a revolver, because you can feed weird special-purpose ammo through it. "Serious" firepower is a Glock 21 with lots of extra mags.

both... we got family with allergies, so we don't want 'em inside, though we love dogs, but we love the wildlife (deer, turkeys, etc...) comin' up into the yard... yuh got an outside dog, that ain't gonna happen...

Hey, just now, I couldn't get Roy to let me pick her up...she is the older, more independent chicken. So I reached down and picked up gentle Jar Jar and started to walk away. Roy went nuts! She started following me! Jar Jar was peeping at her and Roy was squawking back and we got all the way to our screened in porch and in walked Roy, right into the porch! Then I put Jar Jar in their box and Roy let me pick her right up and put her in!

True enough about the wildlife.
There are a few danderless dogs that are hypo-allergenic (besides just poodles, which I just can't picture you with)
Great Pyrenees are one... Beautiful dogs, around a hundred pounds, protective and not real prey-driven, as they are a protecter, not a herder of sheep. And no dander, so allergic people can be around them. You can shave them in summer if they are hot.

How about a garage dog?

With Gidget contained in her fence, I do still see wildlife here though.... Deer frequent my pasture, and my bunnies definately know where Gidget's boundary is... Even coyotes have been spotted in the pasture, undoubtedly after said bunnies.
