The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I remember when Matthew was a newborn, he wouldn't let me put him down. I kept trying and every time I did he would cry and then he would end up loosing weight. It was catastrophic until I finally said "Forget this...I'm holding him". I held him till he was four months old, then one day he was sleeping so soundly in my arms that I ventured to lay him down. He slept soundly in his crib for 20 minutes.

I ate lunch with nothing in my arms for the first time in 4 months.

Don't know why I thought of this, but I did, after reading your posts.

Mack just read my last post to you and said "they haven't left, they just don't sleep here anymore, everytime I look around Charlie is here with his head stuck in the icebox with icicles hanging out his nose"

Okay, this is what you have to show Mack. My boss has 5 kids like that. All grown adults. 3 of them seem to take turns coming home to live for a spell - 2 of them with their own kids. Boss and his wife are always having to deal with kids returned home to live. In all the time I've worked here there has not been a whole week that they didn't have someone else living in their house.

And since Jill lives in Germany, she isn't here that much. My son-in-law's next duty station when he leaves Iraq is supposed to be in Alabama, so it's not like they'll be here a lot.

Myranda, on the other hand, graduated and then in less than 24 hours has cleared out for Germany also for 30 days. She is going to San Antonio for 9 months starting in late August so my boss is envious today. He noticed that I was all smiles and wanted to know how I did everything right so that at least barring some tragedy, I am assured of now having 30 days of life to myself. His wife was up at the office today too. Both of them are jealous.

I totally understand why you thought of this!!! LOL

Seriously though, everyone here I think knows how crazy I am about Myranda and how proud I am of her. But, it is so cool to have this feeling that I know she is a responsible enough young adult that I have sent out a person who will be a valuable member of society. That is a cool feeling.

I've seen the movie... it's quite wild. Johnny Depp did a good job, I think. But, I've never read the book.

Hee... one of my brothers would not go to sleep without someone touching him, until he was almost 1. At naptimes I would sit by his crib, one hand over his and reading with the other... hey, at least I got time to read...

I don't really remember ever coming across a burrito that I didn't like!!! LOL!!! But, yes, I love those too. and I like the plain old cheapie bean ones. Back home at the Texaco those were 59 cents each.

Heh... I was just thinking about Mary Chapin Carpenter's song "I Feel Lucky".

Congrats on getting more salary for the summer... it is very good to have a boss that cares about his workers!

Oh our kids are both happily married and living away from home, 6 miles, under strict notice that once they moved out there would be no moving back in:)

But we are self employed, the shop is at our place and my son is running the business, hence we see him everyday.

My daughter and I are best friends, have never done anything without the other, she was homeschooled remember, then we worked together also for along time, so I talk to her at least every day.

We really are not complaining, and would have it no other way, but hey, parents have to have something to gripe about about their kids. If thats the worst thing we have to gripe about I;d say we are fortunate.

BTW, Charlie showed up during the Chicken Moot. He knows to take things like a room full ofkids watching chicks hatch in stride. I was so proud:)

We found out later that any little noise bothered Matthew...footsteps on the floor, the AC kicking on, would send him screaming. To this day, he has very sensative ears and eyes.

I got critisized a lot for holding him all the time, but when he got down to 4lbs something, I ignored the critisism and did what I had to do.
