Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

We just figured it up. I got an 80% hatch rate, if the two that are still pipping go ahead and hatch. That means that 8 did not hatch. 2 of those 8 developed, but for some reason on pipping died. One from coming out the wrong end. I have a feeling the others did not even develop, but I'm not going too look:). I had 39 to start with. So all in all I think I did pretty good.

Different bikes ride different and feel different. If you have ridden long enough to feel comfortable riding then you will be able to adapt to any bike. The interesting thing is the difference in feel between all bikes. The way they fit your body. I can't stand riding Jap bikes they are very top heavy and when I stop or corner I always feel like they are going over. Matter of fact the worst I've ever laid one over was an old drag bike one of my ex-s used to have. I just wasn't used to the top-heaviness of the japs and I leaned and it went out from under me on pea gravel in the middle of an intersection.
Anyway, those are so uncomfortable to me that I am totally satisfied in being what some people call a snobbish Harley rider. For my body the most comfortable bike to ride is a dyna-Superglide. I can't explain it but it's much easier than any Sportster. Those 883's are a little harder to handle even than the old iron-head sportsters. Also, for me, anything else on the "dyna" frame is comfortable and easy.
When it comes to riding bigger bikes like electra-glides I'm just as good with that as I am on a sporty. I have long legs so the height of bike or location of floorboard and things like that don't make any physical difficulty. I did have a really good friend that went from a Harley to one of those Yamaha Royal Stars. That and one of those Boss Hoss's are the only bikes I've ever been on that have been leg length challenging because they were just so flat dadgummed wide along with the height. I rode my friend's Royal Star on a pretty long ride one day and it handled great it was when I was stopped at stop signs and especially in the parking lot to park that I felt challenged by it.
I guess that's the thing, when you get on a bike and get velocity going, it is the bike that's going to do the work - not you. So, the size becomes handle-able as long as you can get your legs to the ground when you are stopped.
Now, all that said, I will also tell you that I am off-again, on-again always trying to sell this softtail that I've got now because it is very tiring for me to ride on long road trips. And, it is the long wheel-base that makes it wear me out more over a long day's ride. The group I ride with is a ministry and we plan our trips to get to destinations in a timely manner. Therefore, we sometimes spend 12 - 14 hours in the saddle. On this bike, after that long, I am exceptionally tired. More tired than I know I would be on a dyna-framed bike. But, also, my frame is chopped and raked so that makes it harder to handle also. That adds into the formula quite a bit.
I talked a lot. I don't think I gave you a straight answer.

LOL...I'll have Mack read this and translate. The Sportster is the only thing I have ever rode by myself. WEll my daughter did get a small Yamaha Virago that I rode home from the dealership. I liked it, but it was smaller then my Sportster.

I don't think we have any firm plans...just a kind of "Someday we'll have to get together." We usually go into Missouri once a year in the summer, so it could happen.

Short version. If you can ride the Sportster well, you can adapt to any bike you want. But, some will be more comfortable and fit you better than others.
(you know straight women that ride Harleys are often referred to as hens) In the group of hens that I ride with a few prefer Sportsters. They are lighter weight. A lot, probably most of us, prefer some variation of a dyna. Dynas are Superglides, Low Riders, Wide Glides, some people call 'em just plain dyna-glides. The seats are lower to the ground than a Sportster is why I like it. And it has a regular big twin engine so you get more power. I used to have to keep my 883 opened up full throttle to keep up with some of my guys going across desert. I like having power to spare. It's like on a Superglide I can barely move my body and the bike responds. I love that. It's almost like it reads my mind. Don't want to get too maudlin and cliche here but on a Dyna Superglide it feels like me and the bike are totally one entity.
