The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

How's the skeeter situation in KC? On my wooded lot I have skeeters 24/7.

We don't have any poisonous bugs or snakes either... a few black widows, but they aren't life-threatening. That is another benefit. No poisonous things. Arizona made me nuts with the scorpions and rattlers! eeeek.

I don't know what chiggers are, so I don't think we have those either!

I am too far from water to have a bunch of mosquitos, and I don't have a lot of flies if I keep the manure spread.

OT: not too bad, depends on the weather to a certain extent, maybe mid to late June they start showing up and usually of an evening but a bit of spray and we're good to go.

West Nile is here, birds have tested positive for it; maybe cause and effect or not but virtually no bluejays are around anymore. Haven't heard of any people testing positive for it around here.

" It was very good, but I still want to read the books." You may want to consider reading the "Hobbit" later, after LOTR. I think it's better that way.

I'm over half finished with the Hobbit already. Should I stop?

I have turned the eggs for the last time. you don't turn them the last 24hours. I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. The egg that has started hatching, the pipped egg, it's pipped on the wrong end. The chicks usually pip around the big end. This egg is pipped at the pointy endy. Breach?? Maybe that is why it's early? There is still alot of peeping going on from the other eggs. So I would say we are good to go on Mon. I will give you a report tomorrow morning before I leave for church.

No, I guess not. At this point you should finish, I suppose.

But I read the Hobbit first because I was told it came first. I liked it fine, but it didn't make much of an impression on me, really.

But when I started in on LOTR a week or so little later, I was stunned.

Within 100 pages, I knew that LOTR would be a lifelong "friend" that I would always go back to...and I have (I'm 54 now), and still do. It's just that kind of book.

"The Hobbit isn't," though it is very nice.

Others may disagree with me?

These are the kind of remarks that have made me curious about LOTR. The Hobbit hasn't done much for me either, but it did make the beginning of LOTR (the movie) more understandable.

Thanks for the comments. I have been looking for something new to read for so long. all the "modern " number one best sellers lately have been very disappointing and I am tired of reading the same books over and over. LOTR will be my summer project thanks to the people here. I am sure it will be worth the time.

Wow! No bluejays? I think some birds near Jordan Lake have tested positive for West Nile, but I haven't heard of whole species disappearing.

According to my vet, this is suppose to be the bad year around here for West Nile. Upon his reccomendation I vaccinated my horses this year. I have not sent any in to be tested, but I have found several birds dead in my yard this year, that's a first.
But I have seen some bluejays around.

We haven't had any cases yet I don't think, but many people are starting to vaccinate for West Nile. I started last year because I had a dead crow in my water bucket and panicked - Heh - Sounds like I panic alot today huh!
