Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I don't read that much into HP. The way I see it, and why I think it's so wildly popular, is that it plays on a kid's normal tendency to want to live in a fantasy world.
In the "old time" fairy tales, the evil ones were the step-mothers, done purposely so not to dis' the Moms, but nevertheless someone with whom the children could identify.
In the sense that some are special, I don't see it any differently than movies like "First Kid" or "The Santa Clause" or "Angels in the Outfield." It's fantasy, and what "normal" kid doesn't wish he had the power to zap the school bully.
I guess what I'm saying is that I think the anti-witchcraft crowd has given HP more substance than it really has.

I can see it. - I had the same experience when I had a breeding pair of Black Molly fish. They are live bearers and tend their young, so they are kind of fun to have in breeding sets and it was fine when I had lots of females in with the male, but when I got down to just one female he killed her. Later I just got a piece of glass to partition the tank so they could have a break.

I guess if she had a way to keep them seperate, but I think that would be cruel also to the rooster, after all they are suppose to live in a flock.

Well, and he would make so much noise he would drive her nuts. I am betting when she comes back and sees your post she will no longer think it sounds like a fun idea!

Do they neuter roosters? HA! ;~D
To: HairOfTheDog
I am hoping that too. I still shudder when I think of it, and still want to club the roosters everytime I see them on a hen:). But I have noticed now that I have plenty of hens that they don't seem to mind any more,LOL, gosh, what a converstaion, LOL again.

I can think of a whole lot of really inappropriate things I can say, but so far nothing I feel safe saying! LOL!

I was sitting here discussing chickens with Hair, and heard the chicks peeping:) Went and checked on them, and noticed a few of the eggs jiggling.
I find this interesting. This is the 3rd batch I have done. The first batch was eggs from my own chickens. My chickens get feed cracked corn and run free over our 5 acres. The eggs are all in the extra large egg catagory. The second batch I hatched the eggs came from a friend who keeps her chickens cooped up and feeds them chicken feed.
My first batch I heard chicks peepeing several days before they hatched.. When they hatched they just exploded out of the shells, real strong and healty looking, none died. The second batch, that weren't my eggs, I never heard peeping and when the chicks hatched they came pretty slow, and took along time to get up and move around with any kind of stability, and 3 died. I had an 85% hatch rate from my eggs but only 70% from hers.
These eggs in the incubator now are my eggs, this is 2 days before hatch day. How much difference do you think the way I feed my chickens vs. ones cooped up makes in the heatlh of the chicks? I really think mine are stronger and healtheir:) because they roam free. What do you think?

When does SuziQ need him?I'll need him by June 25th so I'll have time to get him packed for the trip.

"League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" looks interesting, thoughWe saw that preview when we went to see X-Men 2. It looks like something we'd enjoy; But then we'd enjoy anything with Sean Connery in it!

I know a woman who does not object to LotR, but refuses to let her children watch Mary Poppins because "Mary must be a witch".I think some folks are just wound a little too tight! I think fantasy is fun, and something children and adults have enjoyed for YEARS!
To: PayNoAttentionManBehindCurtain
Huh.... I don't know, if the free range health of the hen, and probably most important, a free range diet, produced healthier chicks, that would be interesting.
Are there breed differences between these batches, or are they all kind of mutt chickens?

Tell me what you find out about a GOOD DVD player! We have a Toshiba 2 Disc DVD player. I think SSQ ordered it online, and I don't think it was too very expensive. We've had it for a couple of years now and it still works great!

I am getting anxious. I have one egg starting to pip. Not sure why it is happening this soon, and if that means they will come tomorrow. I am not sure what to do, we will not be home tomorrow because of church. I really do not want you to miss this since you want to see it so bad. I guess if more eggs start pipping and I haven't heard from you, I will call. I don't know how long you want to sit out here and wait to see a chicken hatch:)
If for some reason you miss it:( maybe you would just want to hatch the next batch, and I would take them home as soon as you were ready to get rid of them, even if it was the same day they hatched.
If everything hold off till Mon. what time do you want to come out? If they hold off I would say they will be hatching thru out the day. That's the way it has gone in the past anyway:)

Most of mine that lay the eggs that I hatch are pure bred Rhode Island Reds. The roosters are mutts.
The eggs I got from my friend or pure breds, I just don't know what kind, but they are not Rhode Island Reds. Forgot to mention her hens eggs are not as big as my hens eggs. Is that determined by the breed? LOL, I have one egg I have kept as a souvenir...I thought for sure the poor hen was dead. This thing is huge.
Becky
To: HairOfTheDog
BTW, this batch has more mutt eggs:) then the last. I'll have too see if I get more duds from the mutts, LOL.
