Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Thanks!! I tried to connect to the one from Northern Michigan that I watched last year. I'll go check this one out right now. It was so fascinating to see!

I do too, but this is leftover chicken and there weren't any leftover biscuits! LOL So I had to make my own. The world's easiest drop biscuit recipe...
1 Cup self-rising flour
2 tablespoons mayo
1/2 Cup milk
Mix it all together and drop spoonfuls on a baking stone. Bake at 350 till brownish.

This is one of the Eagle cams we saw last year. This one was funny because one day, the dad brought a fish up to the nest and fish guts got slung on the lens making the image a little blurry!!
In the Michigan one last year, the eagle laid two eggs. Both hatched, but the one that hatched first got most of the food early on and the second one didn't survive past the third day.
I took the kids to a Bird of Prey Rehabilitation facility in western MA last year. The man said he'd go to bald eagle nests, and if there were two eggs, he'd take one and hatch it himself. He'd feed it with a puppet that looked like an eagle. He'd never let the hatchling see him so it wouldn't imprint on him. When the little eagle was a few weeks old, he'd climb back up and put it back in the nest. He said he had never had a eaglet rejected by the eagles when he put it back. This way, he said, that second one had a much better chance of survival, and it made for more eagles in the wild!
He's been breeding bald eagles in captivity for the last 20 yrs., and bred and released the eagles which were the first to nest and successfully raise eaglets in NH in about 10 yrs.

Yep.... this is the pair that we were all watching intently here last year until the fish guts! This nest is about 40 miles north of my house.... There is at least one pair near our beach house too, and we see them fishing.

That is lovely, 2J! I know he'll love it!Every time I read it, I feel like crying for some reason. That quote from the book just really hits me hard every time I read it.

We live by the Ark. River, and are seeing more and more eagles around.
A point of interest if you are interested in other birds.Last year and again this year I have a pair of Mississippi Kites nesting close by my house somewhere. They come and sit in some dead trees on my property. Not to many peopel I have talked too have seen that breed around here Their pretty good size birds.

I hope you have fun reading it! - The hobbit is a good place to start. It will be a quick read because it is for kids, but it will give you a feel for Tolkien's style that will help you when you start LOTR.
Very exciting! - I hope you give us reports! We love to talk about the books, but we run out of new things to say sometimes.

I love that recipe! My Daddy used to make them all the time. He called them Angel Biscuits and made them in muffin tins.
Do you think the recipe would work with low-fat mayo? I'll have to check it out! I'd also have to add the baking powder, cause I don't use self-rising flour.
To: SuziQ
I don't know! I like them because they are quick, Josh can help me make them and they don't have egg in them so Josh can lick the spoon and scrape the bowl.

I would not be able to describe a Kite bird!
Also at the same website as the eagles is a Heron cam (pre-recorded, not live) that is pretty impressive because they are so huge. They stand about waist high, and four babies and a very overworked parent just barely fit into their nest.
I love Herons.... they also live near our beach house, and when they fly, they look just like Pteridactyls. (sp?)
To: 2Jedismom
LOL As long as you're not shocked and awed!
