The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

37 years old is gettin' pretty old indeed. He got a good roll of the dice on life! Undoubtedly because he sounds loved very much!

Alkaline soil causes pink while acidic soil causes blue pigmented flowers. I would imagine the depth of color would be the degree....

Here is something concrete:

HYDRANGEA--COLOR

The color of some hydrangea can be changed by modifying the soil pH.

Hortensia hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) will turn blue if the soil is on the acid side. Fertilize yearly with an acid fertilizer according to direction; modify the soil when planting with two (2) pounds of sulfur and peat moss. A pH between 4.5 and 5.5 is desirable.

To turn flower pink to light red, the soil should be neutral to alkaline. Use ground limestone ONLY around the plant if the color isn't pink. Pink colors occur between 6.5 and 7.5.

At pH levels higher than 7.5, chlorotic leaves and poor growth results.

But the lake is leaking. Apparently they've discovered it drains itself every 100 years.

Hmmm. Where is all the water going?

I'm reading a book by Arthur Clarke from the 40s. It's describing a space voyage, pretty well for being so old. But then in the middle of a paragraph someone starts worrying about his typewriter down in the cargo hold. It's so jarring. I just laughed out loud.

It can happen in movies, too. The original release of "2001" came out in Cinerama, which was available in only a few big cities. I remember seeing it in Detroit (it was a big city then) at the Cinerama, and the access panel to Hal's innards said "core storage array". I was so incensed, I blurted out "they won't have core by 2001". Of course, everybody else was spaced out on drugs, waiting for the light show, so nobody complained.

A year later, and in all the releases since, they sign says "memory storage array", or something like that.

Looking back, about the only thing that came true from the movie were the weird digital cameras, that are now commonplace. It's still a good movie to watch, because it was made with a "best effort" attention to detail, and the best guess they could develop for the future.

That's what a friend's mama told me once. She had huge hydrangea bushes growing down the shady side of her house in Mississippi. They were the most gorgeous blue puffballs I've ever seen.

The hydrangeas up here in MA grow on trees, and their blossoms are shaped like lilac blossoms, but they are a soft peachy pink. They're actually lovely, but when they dry, the color goes out and they're sort of a beige-gold. They look good in Christmas decorations with a spritz of glittery gold paint on them.

Wow... well, at least you're not the only person having trouble with them.

Don't know if you're looking for a new host, if you are, I use these guys here. I've gotten really good service from them... but they're located in Austin, don't know if that will make a difference for you.

Heh, that's one of the things I like about reading old SF, running into unintended anachronisms.

Actually, I think the yellow flip-flops were decorated with pink flowers. I just know she looked thin, bright and cheery, had on a sleeveless cotton matching blouse and I just felt like a fat old slob.

Her kid looked like a bald faced moron, though (hate to say that after Ruthy said such nice things about me) but she was like 2 years old and sucking on a binky, walking around not paying any attention to the reader. My kids never acted like that. When someone was speaking, they either could do one of two things...listen or fall asleep.

Matthew sat with me and chuckled about the "little kids stories". At one point, the little bird asked the Hen if she was it's mama (you know the story) and Matthew turned to me and whispered..."MMmmmm, hen. I'm hungry!" LOL

Joshua sat absolutely quiet, but had inched himself up to lady that was reading till he was right at her feet. It was so cute.

Thanks for the compliment, Wneighbor. We strive to produce excellent results when a Dell owner calls for tech support. And it's comments like yours that help make it a job worth doing.

I didn't really want to kill that customer; all he wanted was a working handheld. It's my job --- and, indeed, my pleasure --- to get my customers up and running. But ... ye gods and little fishes, I wound up staying a hour and twenty-five minutes past the end of my shift with the guy!

On the other hand, his handheld works now ...

How long before it fills up again? Or can they plug the drain?

I don't think they know that. With the drought last year, the water was really low. I'm not sure where things stand. I'll ask around.

Heck, I'm just tryin' not to kill the things. Don't really care what color they are.

Kinda like my hair. I can live with color change as long as it stays in...
