The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

The thing is, it was in the "Kiddie section" of the library! Had filters and everything on it and it got through. I seriously nearly died. I never clicked off of something so fast in my life! ROFLOL!

Well, it would get throught the filters because it was from a greeting card site and title had something to do with drinking too much water.

So, I'll be back around sometime tonite...

Oh good. That will give me time for research. The only practical experience I have is with irises: I planted them in the fall, as I recall. If memory serves, you're not supposed to plant them too deep and not when it's wet.

Glad to hear that she's feeling lots better!

The Noble Collection's LOTR catalog was in my mailbox when I got home. Look-ee here....they have Gandalf's ring. Funny that they don't name it. :)

That's wonderful, WN! Isn't it great to have email? How did people live without it?

I would have been a basket case without email after they married. The week after the wedding they moved to West Palm Beach. Ugh! But, I had email.

I've thought about my great grandparents who moved from northern Arkansas to my home county the week of their wedding. My great-grandfather married his first wife Mattie and moved to Bosque county. After giving birth to 1 child Mattie was pregnant with the second child and fell into the fire under her wash pot while washing clothes and burned to death. Interesting thing about Mattie. She had a twin sister. So, my great-grandfather went back to Arkansas, married the twin sister Charity, and Charity is my great-grandmother.

Can you imagine being the mother sending off your 2nd daughter when the first one already died off in Texas with this guy?

I would never have thought to put yellow flip flops with a pair of pink flowered capri pants! I have no fashion sense!

That's what the OLD folks wear...the cool college kids wear Chuck Taylors and tee-shirts ;-)

Seriously, I WANT Chuck Taylors now! And my 12 yo sister tells me they're VERY cool!

Well...I see plenty of Chuck Taylor wearing kids around! And work pants seem to be all the rage as well. Plus I gather hooded sweatshirts are very stylish.

I just KNEW I'd be in style if I waited long enough! ;-)

Oh good! Glad she is over this hurdle... - I am still worried that she doesn't have a good friend to help if she gets sick.

She and I have talked about this a bit yesterday and today. She spent 2 years heading up that FRG group. Then she had a falling out with the colonel's wife just as the guys were getting sent out and she's not having anything to do with FRG now.

Jill was right about the issue and she knows it. The colonel's wife hadn't wanted to even participate in any FRG correspondence since she got to Germany. But, soon as the deployment orders for the battalion were there Mrs. Colonel stepped in. Jill had set up a series of information meetings to tell the wives what to expect during the deployment and to assess needs by family. Mrs. Colonel said she was going way too far and canceled all the meetings Jill had already set up and arranged speakers for and set up committees to handle needs for etc. Jill blew up and resigned. Now, even though I am sure many of the ladies that were in the group for the last 2 years would be more than happy to help Jill she is too stubborn to even call them. heh.

sounds like God's bringing her to the point where she will address this huh?

i cannot - do you hear me? - cannot figure where she gets this stubbornness!

Well, I'll tell ya...I've just been dying for my old Nike sneakers with the blue swoosh to come back...the ones I wore in the 80s. When I found out they were discontinuing them, I bought every pair I could find. But that's been years ago and I thought when I saw the Jedis sneakers..."Hmmmm, those might do." And they sure are mighty comfy!

See, in our day, what with things like OJ and Laci Peterson etc. Even though this is my ancestors I think...."fell in the fire washing clothes?? a likely story."

And if I was the mom of the second twin........ I DON'T THINK she'd have got out of my house unless I went right along with my 12 gauge to keep both eye's on that guy.

Interesting.

My mom and dad met here when dad was here stationed at Fort Lewis. Soon after, he got out and they married here and left immediately for my Dad's homeland in Arizona. The drive down was their honeymoon, and my Grandmother didn't like it one bit.

In an old family history that I put together, we learned from old written accounts that a great great grandfather fell off a cliff in Norway, and that my great great grandmother married the guy's brother soon after. We decided he was pushed.

And people think these high profile news stories are new stuff! HA! There is nothing new under the sun.

I like your stories too. I have noticed that just in learning about family like that there is as much entertainment as the common romance novel! My grama's little sister married a guy in the Navy in San Diego during WWII. He was from AZ. She was a nurse in the navy. They couldn't come here to meet the family and the first child was "born early." LOL. Grama says after that my great-grandparents were more comfortable with the distance so they didn't have to account for everything. Lots of interesting stories about those 2 though. Unfortunately that aunt became one of my greatest role models, which accounts for a lot of my tween behavior.

"fell in the fire washing clothes?? a likely story."

Hey, it could happen. It happened on one of the "Survivor" series (don't know if you ever watched Survivor!) Anyway, one of the players got woozy tending the cookfire and fell into it... burned his hands, arms, and torso so bad that they had to airlift him to a hospital and he had to quit the game.
