The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Note to democritics: if you do something odd in order to make a statement, it's best to make it clear what that statement IS!

Exactly. That was so confusing!!!!

Morning eveyrone!

It's raining cats and dogs here, but I made it into the office!

Becky lost the other bottom tooth last night and she looks so adorable! I kept telling her to look at me and grin really wide so I could see the gap. LOL!

Anyway, on to breakfast, though I see that one plate of bacon is already gone!

BBQ ribeyes and ham, cheese, mushroom & green pepper omelets. I've whipped up some sauteed mushrooms separately to drizzle over the steak if you like. 8 platters of bacon and sausage links, along with OT's crispy hash browns and (my particular weakness) fresh buttermilk biscuits. Coffee is freshly brewed and the juice is in the fridge. Hot cocoa is on the stovetop, so let me know if you want marshmellows in it!

Well, I would like to know the purpose of the get-up. Curiosity ... you know what it does.

I want a ribeye and mushrooms if you please. Protesting made me hungry. I'll even let the dwarves have the bacon if I can filled up on steak and fungus.

And please note, the male young republicans did not seem to have any of those log cabin issues. My baby made herself visible as a protester.

The young man told me that he has been to FR in the past. His screen name is Cretin 4. Class of the day for wneighbor is how to go see if I can find someone's page when I don't have a name to click on to get there. did that make sense?

Well, aren't you two cute?

Your daughter is a very lovely young lady.

But the photographer didn't get your shoes into the picture! I'm very disappointed! :-)

I didn't really get into Matrix either but that might have been because I watched in on TV with lots of commercial interruptions.

Well, I guess I'll weigh in here because we're planning on seeing the sequel tonight.

I loved the Matrix for a variety of reasons.

1) I enjoy cyberpunk sci-fi and Matrix fits the genre nicely.

2) It was visually stunning. Very stylized, very cool. Dreary is part of cyberpunk- just think of Bladerunner and Johnny Mnemonic. The Fifth-Element is on the verge of cyberpunk, it's just a little too cute.

3) It didn't have terrible language or gratuitous sex, although I hear the sequel does. :(

4) It appeals to the contrarian in all of us, the part that wants to be in on a secret, that wants to know something the sheeple don't, the part that wants to be different from everyone else.

5) It utilizes classic storytelling themes, namely the 'savior figure'. A lot of popular fiction is simply recycled classics. Harry Potter draws on Greek myth, Star Wars had the classic hero (how Oedipus was that Luke and Leia kiss??), and so on. But the Matrix is bolder- it goes after the creation myths and savior figures. (Before I continue, let it be said that I am a good Christian and that my Lord and Savior is not a mere myth.) Every civilization has them, a story of how the world came to be and how deity brought either enlightenment or salvation to the people.

I've read heated debates over whether Neo is a Christ-figure or not, over whether the Matrix is Gnostic or Buddhist. It isn't any one of these, but bears simularities because it is based on the same story formula that has resonated with mankind all over the world throughout all the ages. It makes for very appealing fiction.

Frank Herbert's Dune is another example of a 'savior figure' story. Though Herbert sets up Paul as a hero/savior and then trashes the readers for being sheeple for wanting a hero/savior in the first place!

6) The music rocked.

6) The music rocked.

That was actually my biggest problem with the movie. Maybe for OT, too...I kept running to turn down the sound when they would start in with that loud music.

I'm soooo picky, aren't I?

I liked the movie, though. Not sure about this next one.

Here ya go. Here's the shoes.

But, I changed my mind after I shut down the computer.

Decided I'm a Texan.

I wear boots.

So, in good patriotic order I chose

the red snakeskins.

sorry dwarves, men of Gondor and elf-men the legs are covered for this day.
