The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Happy Birthday Bear! And many happy returns.
To: SuziQ
I'll keep my eye out, Suzi, but most of the bookstores I haunt have a no-textbook policy... have you tried ebay?

I am glad I asked you! I really had no idea what age was appropriate. I'll wait a bit longer.
I just got in from fishing! Been fishing all day with the boys! They stayed in the shade and wore hats...I am a bit red.
I love my new reel...just wish I would catch something with it! LOL

My tax refund came today, yay. And I'm working out my plans to see 'Matrix', possibly on Thursday... At least I have people who will go see it with me now!

By the time more reliable electronics and slaved avionics came along, the traditions were set. Runways and navigation aids and charts were all built according to magnetic, so changing it would have only caused problems. I am not sure why nautical navigation was not set up the same way, since it is much older. Ramius? Nautical navigation has been set to "true" since before magnetic compasses were invented. They used the North Star (Polaris) for thousands of years before compasses were available. Its all about celestial navigation. The only meaningful "north" in celestial nav is "true" north.
Once the magnetic compass became available and reliable, they still used it, but have always applied local variation to convert it to "true". Aircraft came about without the long history of celestial nav, and since mag compasses always work with or without electricity, it made more sense to just work in mag all the time.
This was a big issue on the CG cutters that I worked bridge crew. Whenever we worked with the helo pilots we always had to remember to convert directions to mag and *say* that such-and-such course was "180 MAGNETIC" so that they *knew* we were passing them the right thing.
Its all about the stars. That's why. :-)

Very good news!
Looking forward to seeing Matrix 2 here as well!

Now it's settled... Thursday night, 7 pm, with my dad and a family friend. Yay!

Cool! It'll clear OK... really... honest... ;-)
Looking forward to it. I'm at SeaTac right now, as it happens, about to board a flight to SFO. Would much rather be going to sunny Florida.

Don't take the exploding luggage this time.
