Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Good morning everyone! We had a light snow and the ground looks like someone tossed cotton balls all over it! LOL The sun is shining brilliantly this morning and everything is just sparkling.
I'm baking biscuits...just the kind where you whack the can on the countertop (what a way to start the morning!) but you're welcome to them. Coffee too and jam and butter.
To: 2Jedismom
Those cans scare me! I just peel the paper back slowly, knowing at any second it is going to blow up!
To: HairOfTheDog
I know!!! I love it! They pop and it feels like every molecule in my body is going to fly off in a different direction! LOL
I don't guess I killed anyone during work last night...no calls from my agency asking "What did you DO???" LOL Whew!
Actually, I worry about it alot and I'm very cautious. I started getting really concerned when my friend called EMS for a routine trip to the hospital. They were going to take her 22 month old baby in to get it's trach cleared. The EMS guy put it on a vent but at the wrong settings accidently and killed the poor child right there in my friend's house.
My friend was naturally devastated but she's an RN too and realized that they guy had made a mistake. He was hysterical out in the parking lot of the hospital and she went outside and grabbed him and held onto him and told him she understood and that mistakes happen.
I am paranoid as can be I'm going to screw up like that and not only would I feel terrible, I would be unlikely to have an understanding family to deal with...I would most likely be sued and perhaps even prosecuted criminally.
So going to work, even for the money I make, is scary for me.

Hello, folks. I haven't been around, I know...life has been nuts.
Guess what?? I've been offered TWO jobs! Now I gotta make a decision. One is the college job I've been hoping for all along, the other is another network admin job I applied for at a local bank. The bank job is considerably higher paying (by $3-4K), but is evening hours - 10-6 at the earliest, and much more likely to be 11-7 or later. Considering how much I have going on in the evenings...I'm really leaning towards accepting the college position, in spite of the lesser pay. But who'd have thunk I'd have to make a choice?!
To: 2Jedismom
Egads... what a story!
To: RosieCotton
Oh sis, I'm so happy for you! I'd take the college job, too, if I were you. You'll be around young people and in the big thick middle of things!
Welcome back! When life is nuts, come back to the Hole. It's uh...not quite as nuts...
;-)
To: HairOfTheDog
I'm chock full of them.
To: RosieCotton
Congrats! When it rains, it pours.
At least they're not asking you to move. :)
To: RosieCotton
WOW! - Congratulations on being in the fine predicament of having to make a choice! Thanks for checking in! - I was about to check on you.
Is the bank position 10:00 or 11:00 AM to 6:00 or 7:00 PM? It isn't graveyard shift is it? - If it is, that would make the decision for me! Couldn't do it!

Happy New Year!
I've been swamped at work this morning since I arrived late after stopping to pick up some office supplies on the way in. It's a good thing the traffic was light or who knows when I would have made it in! LOL!
Coffee's ready and so is the french toast, bacon and scrambled eggs. I made biscuits out of the can that pops (they make me jumpy too!) and have a platter of hash browns stemaing on the sideboard. ENJOY!
ksen - I am excited to read your review! I saw it for the 3rd time on Tuesday afternoon and enjoyed it immensely! It only gets better.
Overtaxed - I was sorely disappointed to see my name omitted from the ElfBash! list. What have a done to deserve it! :)
Corin - prayers for Jr's surgery. Hope all goes well. Don't sweat the office too bad, since it will more than likely be dead as a doornail today. :)
Oh, and by the way, I love collard greens!!
To: HairOfTheDog
It's 10 AM to 6 PM - though, as I said, that's best case scenario. The original ad was for 12PM-9PM. Even with the best case deal...well, I have an awful lot of activities I do in the evenings that I would have to give up or be perpetually late to. So I suppose I should be pretty confident in my decision?
To: HairOfTheDog
Hair...she's a young lady in her early 20s. She shouldn't be working in the evening!!!
Besides she's also a musician and they don't have a history of jumping out of bed and playing first thing in the morning. They usually play in the evening around pints and such...
(I have a very dramatic vision of Rosie and her life and music...perhaps living a bit vicariously through her! Her working at a college fits right in with that...)

You must not have been around for that particular elf bash session. Should I add Lil'Freeper?
To: RosieCotton
Congrats to you.
I have worked extensively in institutions of higher education, and am biased, because I have grown through my experiences to despise them intensely, as perhaps the most rotten, depraved and corrupt institutions that I have seen in my life.
That was to give you my bias.
I'm also a man, which bends my opinions as well...I would always take the higher paying position in a situation like this, because a position of greater responsibility (pay and responsibility most often work hand-in-hand, in my experiences) will lead to better opportunities for you in the future. The difference here is significant.
It is great to work for love of what you do -- but almost no one will ever truly get that opportunity, even if you think that you are are. All jobs suck, in some way.
You work for money and advancement. I'd take the better opportunity.
To: RosieCotton
Congratulations Rosie!
I'd go for whichever one offers the best benefits package. Check into the health insurance, 401k, paid sick days/holidays, etc. All of those things also add $$ to the salary they offer.
For example, if the college pays 100% of your insurance premium, but the bank does not - right there you are almost breaking even. Banks get similar holidays to schools, but you do not get the day after Thanksgiving off since banks cannot remain closed for more than two days at a time.
They will both have positive and negative aspects - but my hunch is to go with the college. Bank jobs have always been fairly unstable because of the constant buy-outs and management changes.
Again, CONGRATS! What a great way to start the new year!

Should I add Lil'Freeper? Heheheee...Doncha mean Lil'Dwarf-Basher? :)

I bet you are full of those stories.
We had an interesting chain of events when Frank (my step-dad, I suppose, but I never really called him that) died.
He had been to the eye doctor the day before he died. His daughter happened to be with him, or we would not know this story.
In doing the eye exam, the doctor looked in his eyes, backed up abrubtly, and said, "Frank, you need to go to your doctor as soon as possible". and that is all I remember that he said.
Frank did! He went to the doctor, that day! - He had high blood pressure which they were treating, but they checked him over and sent him home.
The next day he died from a massive aneurism in his head.
His daughter always intended to go back to that eye doctor and ask him what he saw. Obviously there was something going on in the back of Frank's eyes that was very troubling.
She didn't really want to know if the hospital that checked him had missed something obvious, because it was too late to matter. So she was torn. I don't know if she ever went, because we didn't stay in touch very long after his death. We worked together on his memorial and estate, but had not been particularly close before, or I guess, after.

I would have loved to have worked for a college! At Rosie's age, I was measuring houses for the appraisal district, walking around with a cigarette hanging out of my mouth and a tape measure! LOL No kidding, can you even picture it?? I can barely believe that was me back then! People would actually point guns at me. I'd just say "No problem, I'll just estimate your house from the street" at which point they thought better of it and allowed me to measure the house! LOL
That was the year before nursing school...I was pretty aimless. Nearly joined the navy!
