Okay, beef jerky goes to the guys I know only.

And you seem open to us trying to get together some more $$ for a Slim Jim shipment......

Ya'll would have had to check me into the local funny farm if I'd had to manage all this stuff. I am so glad you love it. Just proves the scripture about all parts of the body having different purposes.

an insult to women everywhere who choose to raise their families and support their husband's careers.

You GO, honey!! It really ticks me off big time when folks discount the experiences women who are able to stay at home raising their kids actually have. For one thing, we're usually the ones heading up fundraisers for schools, or Scout troops, etc. simply because we have some additional time on our hands. Those are management experiences, folks, as any of you who have had to 'herd' folks at one of the events understand.

The wife of a politician, especially one at the State level, is that much more experienced because of her having to do so many 'meet and greets'. I'm sure she must have outstanding 'people skills', something the editorial writer obviously DOESN'T have!

Thanks, 2J, for sharing the Chaplain's letter with us. So glad the guys liked the snacks.

if we could all chip in and get some kind of wholesale deal even better than a wholesale club. Perhaps a distribution company might even let us buy like a case or 2 and they might even be all boxed up for 2J to send and then we'd just have to make sure the postage was covered

Maybe we could have the company just do the shipping! That way we don't have to do the shipping to 2J, then have her box them up to send them to the Chaplain. I don't know if there's a box size issue, but it's not like this would be going out into the field; it's going to a base, right?

The Chronicles of Narnia!

Oh that would be just awesome!! Wonderworks did live action/animated videos of three of the books about 10 years ago; "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", "Voyage of the Dawntreader" and "The Silver Chair". They were very well done, but with WETA doing it they could be truly wonderful!

C.S. Lewis, a distinguished professor of English, died in 1963 at his home in Oxford

Folks probably don't even remember when he died. His death was overshadowed by a more violent event on Nov. 22, 1963.

I hope that the Christian messages will not be papered over in this production. Unlike Tolkien who said that his stories were not religious allegory, Lewis was very open about having included Christian references in the Narnia books.

I think I've heard rumors of a Narnia project, but I can't recall. I'm not the resident source of knowledge here (I provide bravado and aroma therapy).

Hair or ecurbh might know (or there may be others).

OK, so I funkled! It is a very sloppy, rainy COLD day here, so I'm having some nice warm coffee and catching up on FR.

Our 13 yr. old went on a Boy Scout campout today HAH! The silly thing didn't wear his warm coat, nor did he bring his boots to keep his feet warm, or a blanket to put inside his sleeping bag tonight. I guess he needs to internalize that Boy Scout Motto "Be Prepared". He packed all his stuff last night, and I didn't check it. SSQ took him up to the school to see him off because I was making candy with the Girl Scouts this morning (no rest for the wicked, huh?)

So he'll come home half frozen tomorrow after having done a 10 mile hike in wet sneakers. He said he DID pack an extra pair of wool socks, so maybe that will help. Serves him right; maybe he'll pay closer attention next time! At least it's not going below freezing tonight; it's only supposed to get down to the mid-40s.

JFK, C.S.Lewis, Aldous Huxley all died on 11/22/63

We had liberal friends who were appalled that the Mrs. and I got married on November 22. I told them we were using music from Camelot...(they have since come to their political senses...)

Whatever happened to "Be Prepared?"

Jr. would do exactly the same thing.

Thank you! I have found out a bit more: while I was on the treadmill my wonderful husband did a Google search for me!

Here's a sample.

Unlike Tolkien who said that his stories were not religious allegory

I had at one time found an on-line recording of an interview with JRR Tolkien in which he stated unequivocally that his Christian view of the world was apparent in all his works. That's not the same as allegory, though. Don't know if I could find that link now, but it was wonderful to hear the man's voice - I wasn't born until after his death.

If you take the link I posted above to Corin Stormhands you will see that Douglas Gresham, the step-son of CS Lewis, is very involved with the production of the live-action movie, and (as always) dedicated to the truth of the story as originally told. Hooray!

I did not consciously know about WETA doing Narnia, but it does ring an inner bell like I have heard it before.

Good afternoon all.... quiet day here, grey and damp. Just mostly lounging and bein' a sloth today. Hope everyone is well and busy as you want to be!

"Never change the words of the master," he said, referring to his intent to stay true to the beloved novels.

Oh I'm so glad to read that!! If anyone knows what C. S. Lewis intended with these stories, it would be Douglas!

Interesting; I thought I had seen on one of the numerous Tolkien shows about the time that LoTR came out that he claimed NOT to have done so. Maybe that was just editorial content on the part of whatever person was presenting the show.

Thanks for posting the email from the Chaplain. I was absolutely blown away by it. I hope he realizes how thrilled we are to hear that our modest efforts are appreciated. I'll continue to contribute to the "goodie fund", knowing that you'll pick something that cheers and amazes them.

I'm a bit embarrassed that the binoculars were such a big hit, even though they are real cheapies. It's like those cheap FRS radios that the troops are buying (I saw a captain in the 101st with a blue FRS radio on his LBE), it's stuff that every grunt should have, but the military bureaucracy hasn't figured it out yet. Food, letters, videos from home are great, but these things are tools that can be used to keep our guys alive.

I'd send FRS radios, except the troops may or may not use them, and they always risk an Article 15 if the brass decide to make a federal case of it. Troops in the field also need a quality large lockback knife, but I'd probably go to jail if I tried to send one of those now (I did manage to send one to a friend's younger brother in the Marines in the first gulf war).

Another thing that troops in the field can use are compasses. Not the $80 GI lensatic compass, or the $400 engineer's compass, but $5-$10 ones carried by backpackers. Even in the age of GPS, if things go sideways and you're all alone in bandit country, you have a bit of help on your side.

These are all "comfort tools", just like the food goodies we send are "comfort food". They're good to have, and may someday save your bacon. And you don't have to be an 11Bravo to appreciate it, and maybe even need it in a pinch.

2J, please continue your wonderful work, and I'll continue to contribute. Meanwhile, I'll be taking some of my eBay income, and shop for things I know the troops can use, and that won't get them or me in trouble.
