The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

so, when you find it, you're going to provide a link - right?

I'm trying to decide whether to shower before Myranda's date is over or wait till she gets back. (the parent who trusts no boy with my daughter says stay ready to rescue at all times)

is there a specified age when this communion happens? I'm trying to figure out which one of her kids this is. ha ha ha

Usually children make their First Communion in the second grade, so it would be the 7 or 8 yr. old.

It is wonderful of you to do this for this family. Truly, you don't need to bring a gift. You and the food and your caring company would probably be 'gift' enough for the family.

I hope I can figure out tomorrow which one of these kids is having a day!

Oh I'm sure you be able to figure it out. Being that it is a Hispanic family, if it is a little boy, he will probably be in a nice white suit. If it is a little girl, she'll be in a pretty white dress with either flowers in her hair or a lovely veil.

I've always loved German Shepherds. I think it's a shame that there are so many bad ones out there...the well bred, well trained ones I've known have been among the sweetest, gentlest, most intelligent dogs I've ever known.

That's my memory of the German Shepherds my grandparents had. My uncle got two of them as rescue dogs for them.

I remember Linda, who was wary of me at first, after all her bad experiences. But when we came to visit, she'd go wild with happiness, and bring out all her toys, because she knew I'd play with her.

But laying on her back while I rubbed her tummy with one hand, and squirted air into her mouth with her favorite squeaky mouse, was her idea of doggie heaven.

One of the supervisors at work had a German Shepherd, Queenie, when she was a kid. Actually, Queenie was really her father's dog. She was a washout from a police dog program, because she wouldn't show enough aggression in training. Her father got her after getting a tip from one of the K9 cops in the local police department.

Her father was a truck driver, and on the road one night, and her mother, a nurse, was at the hospital. She was about 13, and alone at home with just Queenie. Around 2AM, she felt Queenie crawl up on her bed, and lay down on top of her, pinning her down.

A few seconds later, the bedroom window opened, and a shaped started to crawl in. Queenie jumped, grabbed the intruder by the collar, and dragged him in the rest of the way. Then she got a grip on his throat, and wouldn't let go.

After she finished screaming, the girl called her mother at the hospital, who called police. The police and her mother arrived, but Queenie wouldn't let the guy go, despite all the pleading and treats offered to the dog. The intruder was petrified with fear, but Queenie just hung on, wagging her tail like she just caught a ball thrown to her.

That was when the K9 cop realized she was playing a game, and wanted the lead dog in the pack to see the results of her expert hunting. So the Warren police had the Michigan Sate Police put out an APB for her father and his truck.

About an hour later, they spotted her father's truck, and pulled him over and explained the situation. Then they drove him home with lights and sirens. Sure enough, all he had to do was say, "good girl, Queenie", and the dog released her catch unharmed (but scared sh*tless), and accepted a pat on the head.

After that, it was family policy that Queenie be spoiled rotten for the rest of her life. If she begged for food, she got it, as long as it wasn't harmful. She not only had her own spot on the sofa, but nobody could watch TV until Queenie was sitting there, too. After what the dog did in protecting the family, it was the least they could do in return, whe said.

Well, like Corin said, it sounds like the southern thing to do - when in doubt you know. You mentioned Bible stories. And now that I know 2nd grade probably, then, I have a little Bible Trivia book in there. It's not denominational but just Bible characther questions maybe some puzzles and geared to elementary school kids. I was thinking I'd put that in a gift bag. All the food and help and all is mostly for his mom - and another soldier who can't be home right now. So, the kid gets a little Christian focused gift.

I'm really looking forward to this too, I got into the Hobbit Hole because of a lack of friends in this new town. And now, because of this I'm getting to be involved with somebody that I don't think would have ever really been open to that before. Gee, could this be God!!! :-) (rousing applause for Him)

It's a boy. And there are 3 children. 2 Boys are the youngest and oldest, a girl in the middle... so I think I've got it nailed with the 2nd grade info.

That is absolutely one of those remarkable stories that I love!!! I am so glad you shared that. Our various family dogs have been that dependable and faithful to our family also. Life just wouldn't be right without them.

Well, I'm glad you got that communion thing all figured out! I'm S. Baptist and don't know anything about it.

I'm very upset this evening...

Do you remember me telling you about my friend in our homeschool group that has 4 children under the age of 12 that had cancer? Well, she has gone to Lord this evening. After the news about Afghanistan and now this, I'm completely sick.

Oh no, I don't remember hearing that. That is really rough. I'm sorry to hear of it.

Well, your friend is at peace, so I'm going to pray for her family. God Bless them. It is so hard for young children to lose their mother. Heck it's hard for us older ones, too, but at least we have a few more years experience with it.

Freepmail me her first name, and I'll include prayers for the Repose of her soul, and for Peace for her family.

Prayers are going up for you too, 2J. I know how hard it is to accept the death of a good friend; especially one so young.

I'll just tell you her name here, in case anyone else wants it. Her name was Debbie. Her husband's name is Ken, and their children are Mari, Hannah, Tommy and Caleb.

She was a year younger than me.

Hugs, 2J. Soldiers aren't the only ones who have to be brave. Sometimes it's tough to have to go on after a loss, but we still have duties to perform. All we know for sure is that God will give us the strength we need, and the certainty of His victory.
