The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

BTW, I got busy and forgot to email you those photos of my mint and wormwood. I just sent them to your other email.

I'm gettin' out o' here. I'm on the bike today. May take the long way home. And then, am helping a friend get food ready for her son's first communion tomorrow. Her hubby is deployed and she's swamped.

What kind of a fiddle is it they used in the music to TT, Rosie?

A Hardanger fiddle (I believe it's pronounced with a hard "g"). More info here. I would love to mess around with one some day! Seems like it would be hard to get good at, though.

Vermont gets earthquakes?

Once in a great while, yes! Little ones, very deep in the ground. I think there have been three here during my life time. I missed two, though, either because I was asleep or out of the state at the time. The epicenter of each was pretty far away, though - NY, I think.

Are you talking about bead stringing and making necklaces, earrings and such? Or are you talking about bead WEAVING where you work on a loom?

actually BOTH...but primarily necklaces/earring and such. Am looking to learn a little metal work too...silly me has this idea that people might like to start wearing circlets and things like that. The ones they designed for LOTR were stunning!! And there is some very pretty stuff popping up on the net because of that movie...a year or so ago, I spent many an hour trying different words in the search engine to find any jewelry sites that made the circlets/bands...now there are quite a few! I also love the duster type earrings and ear cuffs etc. Really bizarre things. I am not sure how deep I will eventually get into the Delicas and seed bead type stuff...my eye keeps gravitating to the huge bulky bead...easier to put together and less confusing to the eye.

Of course, would love to get into weaving, but that seems almost like a whole other art to me. I'm gonna start with stringing first, and go from there.

Mostly what I'd like to see returned to the jewelry front are the twist beads that were so fun in the 80s! I loved those!

OK, then it's not a choir that sings Mass, just that there are lots of singers massed together. I think.

I'd have liked to seen you with the black choir, it's probably not PC to think so, but I think Africans have a natural thing for music. I really like some of their gospel stuff.

They got rhythm and better tone on average! We is clumsy without training.

One of the funniest things I ever saw.... One of those things we know but *don't know we know* until someone says it, was a black comedian that said he had recently been to a white wedding, and how he had noticed that all white people, but white men in particular will walk out onto a dance floor, and have this awkward pause where they "begin to dance". He said.... "black people don't do that". And he's right. There is no identifiable "moment" when they commence dancing, they just dance.

It really was an incredible experience. The only downer to the evening was that Jesse Jackass was the emcee.

I would phrase it differently Sam. Not all African-Americans are musically inclined. It's a misconception that all African Ameiricans are singers (I can say that because an African American friend of mine told me that). Those who are, however, tend to have a different feel for music than us white guys.

We have to stop and bite our lower lip. Watch next time and see if I'm not right. White guys will get this overbite thing going and a painful squint on our faces that we think says "I'm cool."

I am not making this up.

Heh.... you probably won't like my generalization either.... but it is just that, a generalization. ;~D

Lionel Richie can't dance, and Mikhail Baryshnikov certainly can!

I know you aren't making it up! - I can't help but notice it when I go to clubs... I love the nervous "commence dancing" moment.

And I just remembered which comedian said it. (I was trying to picture his little demonstration of the idea) It wasn't a black comedian at all, it was Dennis Miller.

The dwarf rises, walks to the dance floor. He pauses and bites his lower lip...

....and dances his way out the door. I'm leaving early to go run some birthday errands. See y'all sometime this weekend.

You doin' that kindof rock-em-sock-em robot move that white guys love so much?

What does that mean, Hair, a massed choir?

It usually means more than one choir combined, such as when several churches get together for a special event. I've done gigs with quite a few of these.

I'm back from my errands and I see the Dwarf has left us, Hair has been tempted by numerous cute doggie photos and it looks like our guys in the 82nd Airborne may have had something really bad happen today.

I hope not!

Clare just informed me that the LoTR picture at 28,387 MUST have been drawn by a Japanese artist. She says it not only LOOKS very Japanese Anime, the way it is drawn and colored, but it has the 'inside' joke about Legolas and Gimli. I guess in Japan, their 'relationship' is a running gag, thus the heart drawn above Legolas as he's feeding cake to Gimli and saying (written in Japanese just in front of Legolas) "say ah!"

Lots of people just chew me out for giving the dog eggs

My daddy used to scramble eggs for our mini-doxie every day. Then he'd say that WE were the ones who spoiled her!

He is advertising two yet-to-be-born litters for $2000.... HA!

Is that a German Shepherd in the picture you posted? It looks more fuzzy than a shepherd unless that's how he breeds them. Look at that dog's chunky legs!
