The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Heh... The thing is, my friend just adores them. She has read all the books. Her daughter is too young to really sit through them and watch them, and she wants to share this with me.

How did it come to this?

I thought I would send most of my belonging by cart, and walk to Crickhollow with a couple friends. Hopefully Gandalf will meet us there. ;-)

I will be moving Jan. 10-11. My brother will be driving with me so we can do the drive in one 30-hour shot. Housing is all arranged; I will be renting a room from a friend that has a townhouse. My new roomie already has cable internet, so I should be back online with only a couple days away, but I may be asking you to take over the ringpinging temporarily anyway, just in case.

And by the way, I haven't found any new cookie recipes lately, but I'll keep an eye out for one.

Last night, the boys both tried to stay up till midnight. These pictures were taken at just before 11:00pm. The first one was taken because I had a feeling Joshua was fixin' to go to sleep.

I was right, because this picture was taken literally less than 2 minutes later.

Ultimately, Joshua slept on the floor there for an hour (I did cover him up) and Steve fell asleep on the couch. Matthew scooched over and I laid down beside him and we watched the New Year come in together. Matthew turned to me and said "Isn't this the life?" I said "It sure is."

Happy 2003, my friends.

I suppose you could suggest SHE sit through a movie you love that she doesn't, if you can think of any....

Sound's like a good plan. Take such friends as you can trust. Stay off the road, travel only by day.

Well, I still haven't recieved the first set of cookies! - I may be happy with those! You liked them didn't you?

Happy 2003 2J! - I remember several attempts to stay up till midnight when I was a kid. I didn't make it on the first few tries!

Thank you for the fine wishes! I have had a very nice start to the new year watching my new DVD (the extended platinum version of FotR). Did not drink much grog, too busy viewing this great movie -- so much better than the theatrical version, I think -- so I have no headache this morning. As a matter of fact, the wife and I are watching some more of it this morning before being off to brunch with friends.

Seems the world is safe and sound this morning, and I'm glad that all the concerns (up to and including near hysteria in some parts) have turned out to be just more of the same. I get a little piqued about all the furor over the Canadian border because I'm crossing it on Sunday to go for a week of skiing on some fine Canadian snow.

My best wishes for the new year to all of us here on this "friendliest spot on FR" (as I think g'nad or ksen called it on another thread).

Well, now you have put a fine point on the problem. She said she read LoTR when she was young, and she knew I was going to see it all the time, and loved it, but she didn't want to go with me to the theater, it is hard for her with hubby and kid. When it came out on video, she rented it.

"AH! Good!" - I said! "Did you like it?"

"It moved so slow I fell asleep halfway through." She said. "I was busy the next day so I never had a chance to watch the rest."

I am so glad you hear you finally watched it! The most intense new scene for me is the new part at the Council of Elrond, and my favorite new stuff is the whole Lothlorien sequence. I like Aragorn and Boromir's argument too.

Before I commit to a favorite new part (I actually like ALL of the additions, with a minor favorite being the additional Hobbit-party in the Shire before Sam and Frodo take off, and the major favorite right at this moment being the Lothlorien additions) I need to watch it as you suggest, with the Director's comments. I really just have an overall impression right now (it's my third viewing of the movie in total, and first of the extended version) -- and that is that this extended version is absolutely magnificent (the DVD quality is astounding as well), I think it stands well above the theatrical version. But I'll give you more impressions (and more detail) in a couple of days.

Very good! - Yes, I love all the new additions too, and it is hard to pick a favorite, because I wouldn't cut any of them out now that I have seen them! It is a whole new movie!

It's quite clear you must make her sit through the Extended Version (perhaps with all of the extras). If she balks, you have your loophole. As a compromise, then just the second half.

HOD: We had quite a bit of noise, but since it was mostly on the other side of town so Samantha only paced a bit and then laid back down. Previous years both rear and side neighbors set a bunch off, Sam was not a happy camper.

Have you taken a look through or do you have the Atlas of Middle Earth (I think it is the title). Been considering getting it. Really enjoy maps, but wondered how well it was done.

I enjoy maps too... but I don't have the Atlas, nor have I seen how well done the maps are. Let me know if you see or get a copy!

I printed some of the nice maps from Arda to tuck in my book, but I would like better ones, on a smaller scale. I love to flip through and find where they are when I read, and the maps in the paperback are just too small a scale.

LIV'S LORD SONG

LIV TYLER's following in her father's footsteps by singing a song on the third LORD OF THE RINGS soundtrack.

The actress sings a tune in elfish in the final installment of PETER JACKSON's JRR TOLKIEN epic and producers were so taken with the love song they insisted it was added to the film's soundtrack.

She says, "I think it's called ARWEN'S SONG.

When Peter was editing the film he felt a song would be perfect as a finale in the third film, so I recorded it.

"The actress' dad is AEROSMITH frontman STEVEN TYLER.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(I know it says she is following in her father's footsteps, but I doubt her song in elvish is accompanied by electric guitars! ~ Hair)
I caught a peek of the Atlas from a Tolkien bud at work and it is a must-have. The illustrations are fantastic. I think the same lady did this one that did the Pern Atlas, they are stylistically similar. It is definately on my wish list.
