The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

We had an earthquake at 3 in the morning, so they say. 4.8, a little one. I didn't feel it, I am just being told that we had one. I feel kinda cheated.

I didn't lose any bad art this time!

We had an earthquake.

It wasn't on my news! But, then when I briefly lived in Seattle they were never on the news for my Grama either. There were only just little tremors but, good thing, she'd have been worried silly. I was silly, I thought jello ground was kind of fun

Yeah, I've had that happen.

Last one I felt, though - it was about seven in the morning on a Saturday, I was awake but lying in bed, and there was a sound like a STRONG wind - a low rumble...got louder and louder and then the house shook hard and the windows rattled like they were gonna break...then subsided to that rumble again. I looked out the window and it was completely still - not a breeze stirring. I didn't know WHAT it was until I got up and talked to a neighbor. Then I was a little disappointed that I hadn't known what it was!

2J has vibrating cylindrical whistles and a plumber to turn on; Hair has shaking earth, Frodo dreams and a vibrating cat; OT has a night time instrument thats not altogether reliable, Santa just hasn't brought any of those things into my life.

We're housesitting for my sister this weekend while her and her's are on a cruise. There's a pool and a tv with a 60" screen (guess what I'm gonna watch on it tonight?).

Anyway, "Blackhawk Down" was on one of the stations last night and I caught the last half of it. This was a movie that I never really wanted to see because I figured with Ridley Scott and Hollywood it would be a typical "US Military is bad" movie. I was surprised. It was VERY good. I really enjoyed it and I think I may have to rent it so I can see the whole thing.

It made me mad at the Clinton's again, as well as deepened my dislike of the UN. And, uh, my eyes got some dust in them a couple times during the film, ahem.

G'nad, weren't you in Somalia? If so have you seen "Blackhawk Down" and how does it compare to the real events?

Well, the news people are out on "the scene" and they are very disappointed. No grape jam on the floor at the grocery stores or anything. The incident response teams have nothing to do.

The Nisqually quake centered only about 10 miles from here last year was a 7 something. I was a couple hundred miles North that day, and we saw waves in the floor. I was mad I wasn't closer it!

I haven't seen it yet either! How was Orlando Bloooooooom?!

He had a pretty small (and not very good) role.

I liked the movie, but I'm not much into war movies and found it almost overpowering...it was definitely well made, but holy cow - two hours of street fighting...representing many, many more hours as things actually occurred...it really gave me a new respect for what these guys do.

Saw it with one brother, who mostly kept saying "But these guys are YOUNG! Are they really that young?" I kept telling him yes...he hadn't thought about that aspect of the average soldier, I guess. It impressed him - these are guys about his age that are out there fighting for us.
