Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

What fer?

LOL- I love that scam. I worked the dhmo "controversy" up into the introduction to naming compounds when I taught chemistry. It really made the case for the usefulness of a wee bit of scientific literacy for all of us. Great fun.

The thread is dead! Long live the thread!
Actually Hobbit Hole dwellers have been venturing out into the outer world today talking about dihygrogen monoxide, wimmin's underoos, behinds, alternative ways of making coffee and the Civil War...
Quite the adventure.

Lately, I've been watching "Monster Garage" and "American Choppers" on Discovery Channel. I love watching the true craftsmanship that goes into these awesome machines. I enjoy those shows too, but mainly as examples of "Murphy's Laws of the Machine Shop". I've been there, done that many a time assisting my father in his workshop. But as a crafstman who made prototype cars for GM for 35 years, he often made drawings or wood mockups, plus jigs and fixtures, before working on the real thing.
I'm not that level of an expert, but I cringe when I see those guys drilling and tapping painted or chromed surfaces. My dad would have built it unplated and unpainted, got it running perfectly, and then tear it down for painting and plating.
Me, I would build the entire thing in Catia (a 3D CAD system used for cars and aircraft), "test" it, design any tooling from it, and then run off a set of prints for everybody to build it. Of course, that comes from my background in computer support in automotive engineering. Just give me a $250K workstation, and I'll design up a storm.
Still, "Junkyard Wars" ("Scrapheap Challenge" in England) is my favorite, although I enjoy the older episodes where everything was all-English the most. Just something quaint about their junk, and their contestants. I was really rooting for the three vicars.

I sent out some more care packages. These were "directed" donations, by specific people and not really part of the Hole. But still, keeps me busy and having fun!
I saw the quiz, but before I had time to write down the answers (I knew them all), it had already been solved!
Plus, we're trying to finish up 3rd grade here and cracking down a lot on that. I've put this off for far too long!
