The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

You should never refuse to get attached to another one! It is better to have a few moments of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special!

I think you had better keep Smeagol. When you are old, you will have loved many dogs.

Muscle cars, the Chevelle, the Charger, the Shelby... We'll not see the likes of them again. sigh.

MMMmmm. My language. No better sound in the world than the rev of a STRONG engine!

My daughter's boyfriend has a '70 Chevelle. That's what caught her eye before the guy of 'course. I dropped her off at school the first day this year and we both saw that Chevelle. I picked her up that day and she said, "That guy with the Chevelle, he's in my class." Then it was, "that guy with the Chevelle, he's really cute." Then, "that guy with the Chevelle, I think he likes me too." etc etc etc.

We like his car. Him too. But, it's still a project though he drives it every day. It's 2 door, 350, auto. Sounds great. Still needs a lot of work.

Hugs to everybody who's facing the loss of furry friends. They steal your heart a little bit at a time.

I've already loved many dogs. And I'm not old.

Yes, Smeagol and I will be a 2 person household come August. She likes her eggs friend with a clove of garlic crushed on top of them.

She is a drama queen and really pisses me off sometimes though. A former owner abused her and I can trace those tantrums and idiosyncrasies to stuff I've discovered about her. I was abused too and have tantrums and idiosyncrasies too. So, she's going to have to get used to it and cut me some slack!!! (I know, she's thinking the exact same thing about me.) We fit perfectly.

It would have been the right thing to do a long time ago. She is pacing now, aimless, round and round the house. I can't bear it any more, honestly, and I don't think it is fun for her either. She doesn't wag her tail, ever, any more. I think she has pain she is trying to walk away from, some kind of nagging ache that keeps her from being comfortable anywhere.

It's weird. She is still eating *a lot*. A full large jumbo soup can of the soft food she has been eating since she started losing weight on the dry. At least a full can a day, in doses, sometimes two cans. Is it because she is really hungry? - or because she can't remember that she just ate?

Wn. I am surprised at the number of youngsters driving and (better yet) restoring the classic drives, which imho commenced around 1966 and terminated upruptly in 1973. I actually never had one, being a pickup type myself but Susan got a 1970 Buick Skylark in 1971, that was a fine car, she drove it till she got her Pontiac 6000 STE in 1985 (which she still drives). That Skylark just fell into a hole at 70-75 mph, whisper quiet, made the 55 mph national speed limit something of a challenge.

Well, up until the time one is thirty, there is plenty to do for a single person that would be enviable. But beyond 30, those things have lost their appeal, and thoughts turn to who will be there for me when I am 64?

As someone who passed 30 with being dumped by Myranda's dad and told I was too old, fat and boring to be married to anymore and then proceeding to have the best 15 years of my life subsequent to that. I'd say you're in exactly the right place.

Okay, so I have been married and have had kids and all that. Really, my quality of life now can be taken aside from them. The best part of my life is the friends I have made in the last 15 years who have become much more of the fabric of my life than my ex ever thought of being. Friends who I know will be here doing stuff with me when I'm 64, 74, 84 etc.

Funny thing is, missing friends after moving is what landed me here in the HH. And now, as far as I'm concerned ya'll are right in here with the friends I've continued to make and grow over the last 15 years.

yep. you don't have to read the long words I wrote - it all comes down to friends.

Gidget and I will find another that fits in and needs us. I am sure of that. I am so glad I have Gidget! - She is quite possibly the coolest dog I have had, with her weird idiosyncrasies.

Logan was the pedigreed bragging-rights dog. The one that gun-dog guys admired and fawned over. He gave me credibility at the gun club as not just some girlie-girl, but the girl with that pretty Retriever.

Zulu was the comic. Not a silly crazy comic like Gidget is, but a Steven-Wright-type deadpan sharp kind of wit. She was smart and manipulative and was a 'thinking' dog, always. Also was the one that found the birds. She was the one that 'got' the hunt. Not the pretty boy.

Gidget is the dog I wasn't supposed to have. She was supposed to be a gift for someone else that I overestimated at the time. And she is wasted here. She could have been something - anything. She has a mind and a drive to work, if I just had a job for her to do. Maybe we will find something someday.

I am always impressed to see a youngster with a classic. Maybe it's just me but it says to me that the kid has some character. I guess it's my art appreciation. Sam likes paintings, I like vehicular art.

We have my grama's '68 Impala coupe. It has under 70K actual miles. I remember the day they bought the car and I did my learning to drive on pavement in that car. It's got a 327, with a power glide tranny. It runs great. I'm trying to find somebody here in the new town who can put some new valve cover gaskets in for me. I hate to trust THAT vehicle to just anyone.

For my everyday vehicle I'm a pick-up person too. I have a little Dakota. I take it to whoever is around to work on it. (although, will not get oil changed again at the place that told me they checked tranny fluid in my manual tranny.)

My biggest financial weakness is - you already know don't you - vehicles!!!! 2 wheel and 4 wheel.

Friends! Awesome. I'm thinking Smeagol is about to be my high maintenance friend. Myranda has been totally in charge of her care. The eggs just came as a fluke while I was unemployed. Smeagol and Myranda are buds. Myranda gives her lots and lots of attention and puts up with the drama queen bit. But, then Myranda is in her 4th year of Theater Arts so there's a bit in common there. They are really perfect for one another. The only reason Smeagol doesn't go with Myranda is that Myranda is going to a seminary where she has to live on-campus, with a roommate and no pets. That will be a bit of a challenge for her just having to share a room. So, she'll have to come home to visit her furry friend.

I will not begin missing Zulu on Wednesday, I will be able to start remembering her.

I'll be keeping you in my prayers on Wednesday, Hair. I know it will be a hard day for you.

I hope you can bear with me tomorrow! ;~D Wednesday will be full of distractions with the vet tranquilizing Bay and doing the cleaning and his teeth.

Tending to a drunk friend that weighs 1200 pounds tends to keep one from dwelling too much on one's own personal problems!
