The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I still have the fan blowing under there. I want it good and dry before Steve seals it up, which he won't be able to do for a couple of weeks...school is winding down and he is working constantly on his papers. I rarely saw him all weekend and probably won't at all these next two weeks. Joshua accidently called the plumber "Dad" once and it broke my heart. Made me pity the poor children of the guys in the service.

All we want is enough to fix the kitchen properly, including the wall where the mold is growing

Is it that black mold, Ruthy? That stuff is dangerous, and you could mention to State Farm that unless they want to be held liable for your health bills in the future, it would be cheaper to do something about it NOW!

The Mrs. has actually told that to a couple of parents who have kids that only need the English credit. They can take her class and spend lots more money or they can go to the Community College and get the same level class for college credit. And the Community College class would be easier.

Good for Clare tho. I don't envision Jr. finishing early. And, quite frankly, if he wants to play college football, he'll need those four years of high school play anyway.

I got started this weekend on the quilt projects. I find that very refreshing and stress relieving. But I had so much company I didn't have much time for it. I cleaned for and cooked for more than 10 adults all weekend. whoo, it was a task I'm still recuperating from.

Oh yeah...I didn't think of quilting. I am not the seamstess in the family. :) I'm lucky if I can put a button on right.

I wonder if I could change the doors and make it look nicer?

There's a place in the Midwest where you can buy cabinet parts and put them together yourself. Check out their website HERE You could certainly buy cabinet doors! They have a bunch of different profiles, and you can finish them yourself to closely match the ones you have now, or go with a painted door on your existing stained wood frames!

We're going to get a price quote from them when we start building or remodeling to see if their prices are that much better than the big cabinet suppliers. But for your purposes, it would probably work well! Y'all could easily install them yourselves!

Yup, it's black mold. We've already had the environmental folks come in and test the air, etc. The worst air in the house is actually in my mother's bedroom on the other side of the house, but that is natural because she has carpet and she is closest to the AC handler, so she gets the full brunt of what comes through the air filter.

The 2nd worst air is, in fact, in the kitchen. The closer to the infected cabinetry you get, the worse it is.

We change the air filter once a week and NEVER open the infected cabinetry. We also keep the window and sliding glass door open in the kitchen when we are home and it isn't too hot. The real danger is when it becomes airborne, so we are not messing with it.

The whole back mold theory is quite controversial with some folks claiming it is harmless. That very well may be, but let me just say that Becky did not start having asthma until a little less than 2 years ago, which is when the black mold began growing. Could be coincidence, but then again, maybe not.

I was going to say that Becky's respiratory problems could be coming from that mold if she had been around it all this time! Have you or your Mama been having unexplained headaches, etc? Black mold can cause some wierd stuff.

It's so hard to tell if the symptoms you get are from one thing or another. All I know is that I want that stuff gone and State Farm is dragging their feet because they don't want to pay more than $7k. How do they expect us to tear down and rebuild a wall - let alone fix the kitchen - with that amount of money? And where do they think we are going to live when all this is going on? *sigh*

[DEEP BREATH]

OK, no problem. I place it at Jesus' feet and walk away, knowing that He is taking care of it.

As far as the "homeboys" go Corin, are you sure they haven't been at the Gaffer's home brew?
